?? don't know the roku, its older but has HDMI. it was on some cartoon I was watching on Netflix, when I did the initial setup and selected the 720 the image was really pixilated, so I selected the 16x9 and non 720 and the image was fine. it may have to do with my TV or something else I didn't change or fix. I may look into adjusting more in the future but may not since i'm going to be lazy ________________________________ the rein-o official signature:

Thought I'd post some captures with an ATI Theater 750 PCIE card. The colors are better and I'm getting full resolution (tested Dreamcast with svideo. Can see the vertical bars on title screen of Crazi Taxi, unlike the PVR-150 which blurs them out (I thought the PVR-150 was better than that) ). The Firm Widescreen Edition (LD-717 and ATI Theater 750 PCIE 4:2:2: 3D-2D comb options at 31 (max), and noise reduction off. Virtualdub IVTC filter with reduce framerate option). 1440x960 lanczos 2x scaled: taken down taken down taken down Think my caps look way better with the Theater 750 PCIE IMO. I did have chroma agc off with PVR-150 but the colors looked pale either way. Theater 750 certainly looks warmer and truer IMO. BTW is it illegal to be posting raw screengrabs like this? Just noticed FBI warning at end of "Blue Thunder" saying: "Not for public performance"... edit Brief comparison of PVR-150 and ATI Theater 750 PCIE: Evil Dead 2 Vestron LD, LD-V4200 and PVR-150 (2d 5 line combing forced on, no agc or other filtering): taken down Evil Dead 2 Vestron LD, LD-V4200 and ATI Theater 750 PCIE (3D/2D comb options at 31 (max), and no noise reduction. IVTC with framerate reduce via Virtualdub) taken down Now take a look at those colors. That just looks so much better on the Theater 750 PCIE. I didn't enable chroma agc on the PVR-150 but the colors only become more bold (the wood still looks pale in comparison). I'm pretty sure it's the 3D combing at work here, along with the 12-bit adc and 4:2:2 sampling. Theater 750 also has an HD tuner. Overall really can't complain for spending around $27.00 after rebate on the ATI Theater 750 PCIE. I actually spent $25.00 on the PVR-150 and it was barebones with extra a/v cables; that wasn't a good deal if you ask me. I'm actually starting to appreciate DVD more. A 6:04 clip of 4:2:2 video and 48khz 16-bit audio, lossless, takes up a whopping 7.09 gigabytes. That's close to an entire dual-layer DVD! Considering how DVDs normally have menus, ads, special features, and other stuff, mpeg2 does seem pretty amazing. Especially considering DVD became a consumer media around 1997. edit Took down captures as the ATI 750 PCIE has a serious AGC problem. edit again! Okay decided to post them back up. Maybe it'll keep the thread on topic, and if anyone's curious about the ATI Theater 750 PCIE card they can get an idea of its quality. Maybe someone can figure out where to disable agc (maybe a setting somewhere in windows registry or driver file). edit again and again ! Turns out there was no AGC problem. I still don't trust the ATI Theater 750 PCIE card .

Not sure what copyright laws in the US says, but in Sweden it's definitely illegal. You aren't even allowed to upload captures from video games on the internet without permission if you live in Sweden (since it counts as graphics that someone else owns).

I only have the panned and scanned pressing of THE FIRM bought last year on USA laserdisc. I find the colour and brightness to be very satisfactory enough.

nissling wrote: I've taken some new screenshots and Independence Day is back again! This time with S-video and de-interlaced, but the MPEG-2 encoding drives me crazy... Laserdisc (Composite) Laserdisc (S-Video) DVD (PAL) Blu-Ray Independence Day LD: LD-717 and ATI Theater 750 PCIE (2d/3d combfilter max and no nr. Virtualdub ivtv with reduce framerate) 2X scaled with 4X3 aspect ratio @nissling I can see what you mean by, "The equipment matters". I think the Theater 750 PCIE is a good card, but the AGC totally ruins it. I noticed agc after the statue of liberty and bright flash close to this scene. But the colors don't seem right compared to yours (including bluray). I think my ld-v4200 would look closer. This ld IMO is a very good print and I'm starting to notice bad prints from good. @laserbite34 Saw a difference between the hd-dvd and other prints of "Born on the Fourth of July"; what a shame for the hd-dvd. edit Okay I actually don't think the Theater 750 has AGC with all my LDs. I guess my mind was playing tricks on me as I believed it was using AGC realtime. Maybe it only does so with dirty connections, or sources with macrovision.

ID-4 is a fine THX AC-3 laserdisc pressing. I wouldn't mind the dts pressing. Independence Day: ID4 (1996) [0411884]Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas looks clear. Its amazing how picture looks great with quick glance and how little difference between bluray. I'd rather keep laserdisc on my top buying list and bluray somewhere at the bottom. All the top hardcore bluray action releases superheros and sci-fi, I haven't bought that much this year, the format I have lost faith in. I don't mind if laserdisc has small inherent issues in standard definition. It doesn't bother me.

Phenomenon Widescreen LD: LD-V4200 and ATI Theater 750 PCIE (3d/2d combing at max and no NR; "FILM NTSC IVTC" via VLC media player). 1440x1080 Lanczos scaled taken down taken down taken down Good film! I liked it. Was surprised how it turned out TBH. For the record I calcuted a usage of 56.6 gigabytes for this entire LD; compressed to FFV1 4:2:2 lossless video and 48khz 16-bit stereo wav lossless audio. The left channel has AC3 noise lol . The scaling hides a lot of luminance noise IMO but it's close enough IMO. On my doubler I can see minor aliasing artifacts on this particular LD; at least the halos aren't so bad but they're still kinda faint. When I watch LDs, they just look better to me without scaling, but I've never tried a good hardware scaler either. I also don't trust the ATI Theater 750 PCIE even though I'm not detecting AGC (edited previous post about that). Also, the LD-V4200 colors look very much the same as the LD-717 on the Theater 750 PCIE capture card; but both players seem different on my doubler. Actually take back what I said about Independence day LD. My particular print does show some obvious halos at times, but not all the time. TBH I haven't watched the whole LD. IMO "The Shining" captures from nissling look the best. It's very clean and resembles a native DVD (if ya know what I mean ). I honestly could not tell it's composite (Then again I could say the same thing about "The Big Lebowski" ). Also, I think the Svideo shot of "Independence Day" is trying to look like the bluray.

From what I've seen, so far, there is an improvement as it shows less DNR than the UK Blu-Ray giving it a more film-like look. For fans, this is the edition to go for but when thinking how expensive it is, I'm not sure if I would recommend it to someone who hasn't seen the film. Those may prefer to buy the UK or US blu-Ray first to see if it's worth the money. Also, here's a zoomed in comparison. UK Blu-Ray JP Blu-Ray You can clearly see that the grain has been removed on the UK Blu-Ray and it looks more flat in motion. The Japanese Blu-Ray is more intact which is nice. Maybe I should get some captures from the Ghibli box set.

alien wrote: nissling wrote: But those captures are taken from a CRT. Who would ever watch a Blu-Ray on one of those?! I remember The Matrix looked okay on Blu-Ray when I saw it (four or five years ago), although it was somewhat soft. Agreed. Watching Blu-Rays on a CRT is a waste. On a FD Trinitron 25" via Scart-RGB (PS3) a BD is much better than a DVD in background details and colors....although I suppose you mean BD is also much more enjoyable on a big good plasma in fact

Close; old shots were done with a 3070. I currently have a Panasonic LX-H670 which is a better player imo. Still using the Panasonic DMR-ES10, though I'm currently in the market for something better if possible. Will screencap The Matrix when I get a copy. It's a film I like so I'll eventually suck it up and take the monetary hit.
