Can anyone confirm whether the commentary for Cop Land is an LD exclusive? I know there's a commentary on the extended dvd version, featuring director James Mangold and the cast but the LD one only features director.

Excellent question!

Good call. I bought the LD recently and compared it to my DVD (which has the same commentary as the BD), and the commentaries between the LD and the DVD/BD are, in fact, different. Thank you. I just edited the first post.

I've read that the commentary for 12 Monkeys was slightly edited for DVD as on the laserdisc they continued to talk during the black track before the side change. Obviously there was no way they could reproduce this on the DVD so they just cut a few seconds out of the commentary.

It was just a mastering error on the first pressings of the DVD. Later pressings had the entire commentary on them.

I was only mentioning about The Arrival to member today and only the laserdisc box-set has the commentary session. The bluay thinking it was perfect format doesn’t included the commentary or much less the extras asides from re-mixing the surrounds into 4 zones, and plugged heavily with DNR! I still like the grittiness of the laserdisc CLV only I can, only watch side 1 as side 2 is short gone cracked by that imbecile who mailed in wafer thin cardboard.

So how good is the commentary session does it explore the details of the film story and production shooting? As I might get around to buying this at some time, in bulletproof packing mind you.

I don't know to be honest with you. I have yet to listen to it.

Does anyone own the Pioneer Special Edition of Bob Roberts (1992)? According to this site, "Commentary by Tim Robbins and producer Forrest Murray."

The Artisan Special Edition DVD has three commentaries:

1. Audio commentary with actor, director and writer Tim Robbins
2. Audio commentary with actor, director and writer Tim Robbins and actor Gore Vidal
3. Audio commentary with political editors Alex Cockburn and Jeffrey St. Clair

Notice that there's no mention of Forrest Murray.

Does anyone own the Pioneer SE LD to verify that the commentary track on it is, in fact, different than any of the three commentary tracks on the Artisan SE DVD?

I just checked out the Pioneer SE LD, and the commentary track on it is, in fact, the SAME commentary track as the first one listed above on the DVD. Sigh. Oh, well. :(

Very few consumer LDs have anything resembling a menu. Those which do typically have a still frame (with picture stop code) giving the frame or chapter addresses of certain parts of the program. "Level II" industrial LDs with an embedded computer program are a different story, but you will rarely encounter one.

On most discs with audio commentary, you will need to switch between audio tracks : digital/analog & left/right. You cannot do this on most models without a remote, or else hooking up to your computer via RS-232. Fortunately, suitable remote control units are not hard to get.

Why would you do that? A backup player is always a good thing to have around.

I was kidding. I never throw out electronics since theyre one thing people buy used. I dont believe in backup electronics. if mine dies, I'll just buy another one. I can go a week or however long it takes to get a replacement, without seeing Laserdisc. maybe when these players go from Least Concern to Critically Endangered on the Endangered Species Chart I will get a backup, but for now, I'll be happy with one.

Added:

The Wizard of Oz (1939)

It's still a commentary by John Fricke with lots of the same stories that he tells on the DVD/BD, but it's a different recording. He also appears on the LD alone, whereas the DVD/BD has various interviews of cast/family members interspersed throughout his commentary.

There's also the Image discs all with commentary by Paul Mandell:

Citizen Kane (1941) [I6002]
King Kong (1933) [I6003]
Mighty Joe Young (1949) [I5032]
Hunchback of Notre Dame, The (1939) [I5034]

I don't think any of these were ever released on DVD.
