That back hatch allows access to set the tilt of the optics with a long hex driver.

thanks! handy enough feature, i suppose; wonder why PIONEER had retained the hatch on the consumer models, without making an opening in the inner plastic body frame for it to actually be usable? i mean, one can fairly easily DREMEL out a gap in there if they are really determined to make use of that service feature and all, but still...

depends on how much the laser pick-up in question was used in that time.
these units were made well, in the era of legendary Japanese craftsmanship. their lasers aren't going to die from mere age. other things, like capacitors, do indeed age, and often require replacement in older gear, but so far, none of my own has shown any signs of issue, and they are beginning to get up in their years indeed...

unfortunately, a previous owner scrawled all over the last two pages of the second part there, so if i could one of these days at least find another original printing of ARP-1560 without a bunch of unrelated graffiti written all over it, well, that would be just peachy by me i think... BTW; i found the replacement copy i was after just a month or so ago...
