Newbie here. I have always had a cursory interest in anime, mostly enjoying the Ghibli films, Satoshi Kon's films, Akira, etc. But I never enjoyed the more (for lack of a better word) "juvenile" stuff like Dragonball, Naruto, etc. So thinking just about LD releases in English or with English subtitles, what would be some recommendations? The anime I enjoy the most tends to be less fantastic or sci-fi (though I love that too). I would say my favorite anime films would be Only Yesterday and Grave of the Fireflies. But cyberpunk is a genre I enjoy occasionally as well. Bubblegum Crisis looks interesting though I have no idea where to begin with it.

Anyway any recommendations are welcome. Thanks!

If you like cyberpunk then you might want to try Armitage III

Thanks for the recommendation.

Bubblegum Crisis/AD Police looks interesting. Are the Animeigo releases good or should I look at Japanese releases first?

I am assuming the Tokyo 2040 series is a remake of the original. That worth watching? For the time being, the original OVA and the AD Police OVA look interesting.

2040 is indeed a remake. many claim it has far better character development than the original, but personally, IMO, the animation, technical design
and most especially the soundtrack do not even begin to approach the incredible quality of the two original OAV series. to each their own, i suppose...

If you want English subtitles, you will have to go for American releases, except in a very few cases, such as Memories & Ghost in the Shell.
You might well enjoy both of those, however. (The latter also made it to US LD, which might be easier to find.)
Bubblegum Crisis & Armitage III are both good suggestions — I don't feel that either the Bubblegum Crash (sequel series) or AD Police Files (prequel series) are as good. I could also suggest The Venus Wars, and a personal favourite of mine, Wings of Honneamise. Both of the latter are SF, but very character driven.

Getting away from the SF theme, but avoiding the "young men fighting" type of series, there are substantially fewer titles available in US release. I'd recommend trying some "Kimagure Orange Road", which is a kind of junior-high romance/comedy with fantasy elements, to see if it suits your taste — my capsule description doesn't do it justice, though.

Out of a library of over 500 anime releases, I have over 150 American ones (which is a goodly fraction of those which exist), but without more data, it's hard for me to recommend anything for you!

I did catch Wings of Honneamise on Amazon Prime a year or two back. Great film. I do enjoy the more character driven pictures instead of the kid stuff. I will certainly check out The Venus Wars and Kimagure as well.

What about "perfect blue" or "macross plus movie edition".

Otherwise you can always try Dokushin Apartment Dokudami-sou Vol. 1 / Vol. 2 / Vol. 3

I have Perfect Blue on DVD. Very Hitchcock like. I own all of Satoshi Kon's films on DVD. Millennium Actress is probably my favorite.

I will have to check out the others thanks!

I put in a best offer on The Venus Wars. Hopefully I will get that and can fire it up soon!

I don't know how's the quality of the US version, but I have the Japanese Slayers Season 1 LDbox, and the quality is awesome in both terms of the picture and the sound and its quite superior compared to the Japanese DVDbox release. Here's a screenshot comparison between the uncompressed R2J DVD pics and the LDrip pics that I've made. Trust me, the quality is even more awesome.
