Then it just becomes a matter of what movie I want to watch. that's kind of hard to say, as i tend to like all the formats i have on each one's individual merits. i do have a fair number of doubles across formats... it is to be expected. i enjoy having them all, especially 1st edition 1980's VHS and the more exotic LD special editions of some of my old favorites...

Also, I've always wondered. It seems that the TV's and speakers are being skimped on.

supposedly, -at one time, at least- in Japan "OTAKU" was a slanderous title of often dangerously negative consequence, though i don't believe it is the same today.
in the U.S. in the late 90's/early 00's OTAKU became THE cutting edge title in vogue for the serious hardcore Anime fan, and it has since, -much as it has in Japan, i believe- become the catch-all title for the Anime fan in general, sort of gaining and losing value all at once...

I was googling Japanese Otaku Room pictures just for kicks after seeing this wonderful thread, and came across this website (which I found while doing an image search for "カードキャプターさくら ld" of all things) http://www.sakurachan.org/av/equip/... All I can say is... sugoi. The owner of that website must have been RICH to afford all that amazing gear. Granted, this was posted sometime in 2002 according to his/her main site, so maybe most of that is gone now. edit: There's actually a lot of other neat stuff on this person's main site, like comparisons between different video cassettes (VHS/Beta, etc.) and different models of VCRs and DVD players. http://www.sakurachan.org/av/index.htmlI'm currently reading through it via Google Translate. Great stuff!

Partly because I have a reputation as "the anime LD guy" (for instance, I bring a player & some selections to conventions to put on a program of "classics, the overlooked, and the justifiably obscure"), people have had a tendency to offer me discs they were getting rid of, at very cheap rates. I picked up an entire collection of about 200 discs for the cost of postage from one fellow who said he just hadn't played them in a long time, & didn't need them taking up shelf space.

signofzeta wrote: Also, that gold rush with Surugaya. Geez, I picked up SO many anime LDs during that time, most at around %5-10 of original retail. I'm *still* having a hard time believing I finally have a Ghibli ha Ippai and only payed $70. Did you order straight from Surugaya or through Rakuten? I've bought several lots of SFC games through Rakuten, maybe I should start looking for LDs too... I've been getting all my LDs from Yahoo Auctions, so shipping and proxy fees are included and vary a lot. At least through Rakuten I'd get a better shipping estimate! Are the LD sales from Surugaya still going on? You speak of it in past tense...
