Thanks for the well wishes kris. How'd you get into dvhs? Do you ever find stuff on your end or does most your collection come from the states?

I knew the format and was curious about it. On a shiny day someone offered me his laserdisc collection. When I went to pick it up the seller offered me an hd-xa1 hddvd player brand new in the box and the hm-30000 also mint in the box. It came with about 65 sealed dtheater tapes. At first i refused buying it. His wife explained me her husband was always on the hunt for the newest technology and ended up never even using it. The jvc played two tapes the rest of the tapes sealed!
So after negotiating with him he almost gave me the collection .
I got 200 laserdiscs in very nice condition along with the japanese star wars box, an hd-xa1 with 8 sealed hddvd's and the whole dtheater thing for 300 euro.
Who could resist?
Once home i setup the player and fell in love with it. It's an amazing technology imho.
Bought a few tapes trough ebay. Got me alien dts and true lies dts. Must haves i imagine
Meanwhile i found me an hmdh5u for the obvious dts reason  and a few more 30000u players. I would hate to not be able playing a tape one day. i know...
Sold about 12 tapes and so the system is paid now. I don't need or want every tape available anyway.
Feel free to check out my collection on lddb

It isn't easy finding dvhs in europe . I had good luck in germany but is a niche market. You really need to dig deep into the internet.

Did you get your player meanwhile?

That is a hell of a pickup to get all that in one pickup. Actually the DH4000U showed up yesterday afternoon. I hooked it up, put in Galaxy Quest and...picture!, followed by stuttering. I ejected that and tried League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, crossed my fingers, and this played perfectly. Thankfully so far so good, though Galaxy Quest was sealed, I found it odd that it didn't play properly. The seller threw in some D Theater tapes, including a sealed demo tape, which I thought was neat.

Two questions, will a regular vhs head cleaner work, or do I have to track down a D-VHS head cleaner? Also, could I get away with using a regular vcr as a rewinder?

Regular cleaning tape works. I used one. Did the trick.
The stuttering picture happens from time to time with tapes left unused for a while.
I rewind my tapes from time to time on a regular vcr. I had some picture dropouts with the haunting once.
Used the cleaning tape, ffwd, rewinded the tape and now it works like a charm.
Watched die hard last night. Not a single dropout.
Get i robot, you won't believe that quality. It is amazing

Enjoy the player, i would like to get a40000u sooner or later. It is a nice looking player imho.

Thanks again kris. That's encouraging. I am enjoying the few movies I have so far. It's good to know I can get away with a regular VHS cleaner, though I did find out you can still order D-VHS cleaning tapes from JVC. I'm enjoying the machine so far for the most part. Aesthetically pleasing, plus I like that it has a digital optical out. I'll have to keep an eye out for I, Robot.

I robot turned up on ebay. Sadly it's not cheap...
The few tapes available on ebay ar overpriced these days IMHO
Strange to see this. Bought several tapes even mint sealed for 10-20USD each trough ebay in the past.
They should have released more titles but it was over for Dtheater while it didn't even catch on....
I'd love buying a tape today like Drive or Skyfall

Yeah, I see a copy of I, Robot on eBay now for $35 now, wasn't sure if it was worth the price or not. I've been enjoying mine so far, with the limited movies I have. Also I mentioned it once before, but JVC still sells brand new head cleaning tapes, if anyone is interested.
