Cool! I have to look up those box sets then. My experience is that the japanese releases are nicer than the US ones. Always cool with box sets. My hope is that they still can be enjoyed just to look at the contents and artwork in the future when the players probably doesn't work anymore. "This is how movies were released in the old days before digital downloads and streaming!"

I'm sure Maison Ikkoku will be worth a watch. It is based on the stories by Rumiko Takahashi, so probably won't be bad. Haven't checked it out my self yet, but I really enjoyed Ranma 1/2 and Urusei Yatsura.

Haven't watched any anime series in a while but I'll get the Maison Ikkoku box set on Laserdisc tomorrow along with some other stuff. Is it worth a watch?

nissling @ What was the last laserdisc you bought?

Those LDs were really heavy. My fingers hurt but it was worth it.

Got a role playing game for my NEC PC-FX called Pia Carrot. Found out there is an anime based on it, so thought I'd watch it for fun to get the jist of what the game might be about. Happily oblivious of what it was, I started watching the first episode. I deeply regret doing so now. Turned out to be cartoon p0rn...

Entertaining enough. Until it got to the adult part. Doesn't quite suit my taste that stuff. Did some research just now and found out they released some episodes that are not adult rated. Could give those a shot.

Probably shouldn't complain. A lot of the newer stuff seem to have quite a bit of accidental b**b grabbing, convenient panty-shots etc. Most of the time it is part of the humor also. But it never goes beyond that, at least the stuff I've seen. But one time has to be the first, probably inevitable to avoid adult material when digging into the unknown.

The Maison Ikkoku box! I've been wanting to get that for a long time, since both the R1 and R2 DVDs have reached "can not afford" level for me. Plus, the full color LD jackets are amazing!

I've noticed that every MI LD box I've seen seems to have a stained or moldy top. Is this typical?

Yes that is typical and is also the case with Urusei Yatsura.
I am very happy that my MI and UY boxsets don't have this problem.
Some of the auctions you see for those sets, if you look at the tops of these boxes.
They even look moldy, ewwww....

I've plowed through Neon Genesis Evangelion now. The ending were a bit confusing, but still quite brilliant in my opinion. Always nice with something different. Overall I liked the show! Hopefully I'll manage to track down the japanese laserdisc box sets.

Now I started watching one called "Tenchi Muyo!" Seems to be quite a bit available, so took some time to find out which of the shows is the first one. Would be a bummer to start in the wrong end. Looking at the dates, seems the 26-episode TV show from 1995 is the first to start with. I like the comedy and characters in this show, suits my taste at least. :)

Actually, you start with the "Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki" OVA. This episode right here, first LD I ever bought as it happens. There are 13 episodes (1~6, a "Special" episode 7, then a second series of 8~13), plus the so-called "Mihoshi Special".
All the spinoffs pale by comparison.

Dang, didn't do the research thorough enough after all. Guess I'll jump over to the OVA episodes then! I'll have to add those LDs to my wishlist as well. Thanks for the correction, publius! :)

I'm pleased to say that my Maison Ikkoku LD24 has an absolutely mold/tobacco stain free top :D Best $50 I ever spent on eBay (a lucky fluke, as they usually go for over $100 there) and all I need now is the Urusei Yatsura LD50 to bookend it.

I've been watching the LD sourced fansub of Legend of the Galactic Heroes and it really is a gem of a show (the DVD version has reanimated scenes and I'm a purist). The longest OVA series ever, LOGH was a project that only Bubble Economy Japan could green light: epic in scope, scores of characters, and with a symphonic soundtrack. LOGH got a very nice laserdisc release too, with these great looking box sets:

I wish Suruga-ya was still dealing with overseas customers, as I'm sure they'd have the LOGH sets for next to nothing.

At least two of the LoGH boxes came with VSDs of the OP & ED sequences, & another was released separately. I picked one at a convention, the others on Yahoo Japan. The two "Not For Sale" ones are numbered discontinuously, so I like to think there's yet another out there. Someone familiar with the series could say better.
TKFA-55002 (Y1200) Skies of Love / Hikari no Hashi wo Koete
TKFA-55010 (NFS) I am Waiting for You / Tabidachi no Jokyoku
TKFO-55012 (NFS -- yes, TKFO instead of TKFA, don't ask me) Sea of the Stars / Kanso no Uta

Started watching Mamotte Shugogetten now. I find it quite entertaining at least. Wasn't easy to track down, couldn't find any DVDs. Ended up with some really old video files with hardcoded fansubs. Guess it is a bit obscure, at least today?

Thought I'd look into Mobile Suit Gundam. I've seen a lot of references to it, the name is found a lot of places. I got my hands on a nice sealed movie box set containing three films from the early 1980s. This is the set I got: Mobile Suit Gundam: Mastergrade Box [BEAL-934]. My question is if this set is "independent" from the TV-series? Or would I have to watch the TV-series first to follow the story?

Just watched Macross the Movie: Do you remember love, which I read is sort of independent. Alternative version of the story, so didn't need to start with the TV-series.

These are basically compilations of the series, as is common for anime "movies" of the time period.

Cool! Might start out with the first movie then and see if it catches my interest. Guess the TV series will be "better" since you get a lot more story and information. Though, a compilation movie is nice for a curious beginner like me. Liked the Macross movie at least, so guess I'll move on to the TV series soon.

Another sidenote: Part of the reason I'm looking into this series is because a native Japanese speaker I met asked if I've watched any Gundam. He is nice enough to teach me some language, and wanted to use some anime as a "learning tool".
