I have, in my library, a very few LDs with an intriguing feature. On a single-sided disc, instead of a blank plastic dead-side or the typical generic dead-side recorded with the "Program material is recorded only on the other side of this LaserVision disc" message, a special dead-side has been provided. After the "turn me over" message, the laser has been modulated in the outer part of the disc area to draw pictures. These also typically appear to be pressed with something other than the usual transparent plastic, perhaps to draw the attention of the user to look at the disc surface, which he would ordinarily ignore. Unfortunately, it is very hard to get a picture of the artwork!

All the ones I know of are anime discs. I can personally confirm the following :
Galaxy Fraulein Yuna (1st series) 1
Galaxy Fraulein Yuna (1st series) 2
Galaxy Fraulein Yuna (2nd series) 1
Galaxy Fraulein Yuna (2nd series) 2
Galaxy Fraulein Yuna (2nd series) 3
(all pink)
Tenchi Muyo in Love! boxset
(the "bonus" disc, gold)

Does anybody else have such discs?

Ok, I'm going to need to see a picture of that.

I feel as if we had a thread about this before...

Additional "Pit-Art" Discs from my collection:

Maze Mega Burst Space: vol.1 Daitan Sutekina Chousensha!! (Bold & Wonderful Challenger) (1996) [JVLA-58014]
Maze Mega Burst Space: vol.2 Daitan Sutekina Boukensha!! (Bold & Extreme Adventure) (1996) [JVLA-58015]
New Cutie Honey: Special Edition [LSTD01173]

Maybe there was one more that I cannot remember now...

Maybe the Sorceror Hunters OVAs? Someone recently told me that one or more of the Slayers OVAs had it, but I checked mine, & they have just plain ordinary dead-sides.

Nope, they are ordinary dead sides too.
Maybe I was also thinking of an 8" disc with artwork printing on it :)

I guess you don't even have that Shin Cutey Honey up on your site yet.

I do wonder whether some discs went through more than one pressing, & only the first pressing had the "custom" dead side, while later ones were stuck with a "generic" type.

sorry for my bad understanding ... A Laserdisc with a picture on the dead side, like a hologram or colored pvc ?

Yup, the Shin Cutey Honey is in my unwatched pile. But maybe I can snatch a picture of it and update the LDDB entry one day.

Yes it is quite possible that the Pit-Art in some cases was limited to the "first pressing" run - probably a thousand copies or so?!

Nein, eine "leere Seite" wo bei der Produktion gesetzte Pits ein Bild ergeben.

Managed to snatch a picture of the pit-art on [LSTD01173] - turned out not perfect, meh.
Also updated the LDDB entry, but my updates are usually processed very slowly :P

Edit: Sorry, I linked the wrong picture lol...

The last LD of Sailor Moon S has art etched on it. Here's a pic I found online:

Given the first inch or so of the disc appears to be clean of artwork does it have a turn to other side notice or a flipped turtle on that side or is there no readable data on that particular side?

Cool looking item, thanks for posting the picture.

If it's at all like the ones I have, which it most certainly appears to be, it should have a "turn me over" message lasting a couple of minutes.

It would appear that this version of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre http://www.lddb.com/laserdisc/00183/STL ... te-Version

Has pit art on the disc.

So I'm looking into picking up some of these pit-art discs as they would make great gifts for non-LD collecting friends of mine (one's a big fan of Cutey Honey, so she'd probably flip out seeing that pit-art disc.)

What I normally do when gifting LDs is frame them in an LP frame, but for the pit art discs, you obviously want to display that art somehow.

Been looking for picture disc art frames that display the disc cover and the disc, but some of those are pricey as all hell . . .

However, turns out JoAnn Fabrics has a picture disc frame on sale right now (all frames are on sale), for only $17.99 . . .

Get it while you can!
