Just watched Island of Fire (1990) [ULV3108]. This is a Hong Kong release. I found the movie really entertaining, but that was mostly due to the subtitles. The English was obviously translated and written by a Chinese guy with basic knowledge. Poor grammar and spelling. I had a blast watching this one eventhough some of the plot kind of got lost in the subtitle translation.

Indiana Jones: Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981)

Image

The bass mid/sub bass is felt on my body seat to seat with Dolby Stereo and THX sound system.
Chapter 6, 51.33 "well of the souls" has nice timeless and haunting John Williams score.
53.47 I slowly feel the sun as rolling deep rumble across my body 54.35 I feel a kick on my chest from the light passing though "the staff of Ra".

55.44 Deep music bass note on SW that vibrates the seats, when Indy discovers Marion.

Still disappointed that the Indy trilogy THX Dolby AC-3 pressing was canceled as that would have been a sound treat to own. Indiana Jones: Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981) [LV 013761-WS]

What do you think of the Blu-Ray? I have it and it looks and sounds amazing.

Also Laserbite, are you setting your TV to 16:9 stretch mode instead of zoom mode? Just curious .

Watched Suspiria (1977) [ID6900MN] tonight. Very eerie soundtrack which were really simple, but effective. Can't really say I've seen any Dario Argento films before, at least not that I can remember. I actually liked this one, so will be interesting to check out other films he have done.

Using the (just scan) picture mode as the other picture modes crop off a portion of the sides or over-scan a small %. Anything that is 19:9 I still use the just scan on most but not all the time.

Does your tv have other picture modes that display more width?

My TV is useless when it comes to aspect ratio modes, only 4:3 mode and 16:9 mode THAT'S IT.. I use a DVDo iScan HD+ video processor which has lots of different aspect ratio controls.

English Patient, The (1996)

Image

R2 DVD and THX Laserdisc Dolby AC-3

Slight framing differences between the two pressings. The R2 DVD shows a % more of width over the THX laserdisc.

Colour is has small tint differences.

Sound is a bit puncher on the THX Dolby AC-3 pressing.

Picked up oscar nominated Sicrio for sound mixing from Tesco.

Sicario (2015)
Dolby Stereo TrueHD 7.1 (Atmos) Luasfilm Ltd THX Sound System / JBL professional

Full credits list

Opening tensely building the drama up with bass sound with a drug bust.

Picture looks good so far as I'm more less studying the Dolby mix and picture.

Image
ISO set at 400 to capture the detail of clouds in distance the actual picture is a shade brighter.

A bit of grim opening discovery.

Bomb booby-trap at 0:06:34s-47s kaBoom! That jolted me back in the rocker seat! Low is down to about 20Hz!

I like the tense uneasy score by composer Jóhann Jóhannsson, its edgy at 0:24:15 slowly builds up with overhead view looking down over houses to a desert with helicopter panning over the surrounds to LCR isn't over loud it has nice balance.

Overall the LCRSS-SB and LFE.1 has good balance mix where dialouge track is common centre and would be cooler if used with GRAVITY dialouge panning would be 100%. Its still a tense mix some sound effects are panned or off-screen a window winding down or a dog barking panned about the 8 channels.

Benicio Del Toro, was in Traffic (2000) many years ago that had similar tone setting.

Second film I seen with Josh Brolin, in in last few weeks Everest (2015) must be a Josh Brolin, month? lol

Image
Sooty (cat) laying on my lap was started by a car panning on right surround arrays with film played at soft fader level -12.4db on my reference Sony SDDS DFP-D3000, as I like to listen at softer level tonight.

Sooty, flinched and turned to the right looking slightly upwards at the JBL 8330 arrays. I think Sooty approves of the Dolby mix.

Image
Vehicles passing over a speed-bump felt about 90% right expect for the physical feel of it as I know how the real thing jolts the body upwards a slight bit.

Nice creative sound mix for a film that I can relate to other than sci-fi as this subject matter deals with the real grim world of the drug underworld.

The siren sounds is many db down over the real thing that would be painfully distracting so I can tell the sirens are relaxed in the mix but has good detail in it.

Image
The shootout on the motorway with civilians everywhere and shooting-down drug gangs is grimly and brutally bloody.

Weaponry sounds effects not over loud had good sounding mixing texture of frequency range.

I know its not like the real thing but given how far mixing has come the quality is good.

I can tell the film is not 35mm and the digital seems to have progressed over the years.

That's on every most nights on movies-for-men. A bit discriminating to single out women? Should call it Movies-for-moviegoers.

Only have this film on DVD a bit pixel flawed at times when the Justin guy gets pulled back into the airlock and crew all around him with a strobe lighting effect and I can see some confusing in the transfer with large blocks of pixels.

Might get the Dolby AC-3 pressing one day as I like the opening score to the film with deep bass and the sound effects mixing when the space station is orbiting Earth and the spacecraft seconds later.

Saw Event Horizon at the local MGM screen 1, in Dolby SR-D on first day when the cinema had fitted Dolby DA20 to its Dolby CP200 with JBL 5 screen. The bass had nice mild feel that could be felt not too often due to the way it was set-up tuned and EQ.

The rolling ball thing had a deep low end and would be better had I seen in THX cinema to feel it against my body? (At home I can feel against my body and seats). When I saw the film a second time a few nights later the sub in the cinema was knackered as it started to make loud popping noises and ether the amp had been over-driven or sub bottomed out ether way the cinema should had fitted a few JBL 4645 to handle any film soundtrack with little stress. I had not had trouble with my JBL 18" sub yet for 19 years of use.
