I live in a apartment, and I can't use regular speakers and put them on the wall. So I'm thinking about getting a soundbar for my laserdisc player to play surround sound. But I'm wondering if the Soundbar is too modern to use? I have a Pioneer V888 Laserdisc player.

Anything with a line level input will work with most audio gear made after WWII.

I have a few things from Bose, nothing is proprietary. Bookshelf speakers, home theater speakers, headphones, Wave radio, two different Bluetooth speakers, all standard.

Dang, that's ridiculous. Why do I have so much Bose crap?

Well I think I found a soundbar online that will support my laserdisc player. Since I have a newer laserdisc player that supports optical. Now I need to also find a AC3-RF demodulator online.

There is zero point of trying to get two speakers less than a meter apart to do something with 5.1. Just do stereo. It'll be cheaper and better.

If you are using a soundbar, you can just use the stereo outputs. Sound quality of a soundbar is going to be so low that it won't make a difference.

It has nothing to do with sound quality. There is no point to Dolby Digital 5.1 over Dolby Surround when you only have two speakers. A 5.1 system needs six speakers...or at least three.

Sorry, I think I misunderstood. I thought you meant that you are listening to the audio with a soundbar only. In that case, stereo output is fine. If you are going to upgrade to a 6 channel setup, then yes, a multichannel output is worthwhile.

I think I saw a soundbar that supports 5.1 surround sound. But its pretty expensive.

a basic Stereo Receiver and a pair of small two or three-way bookshelf speakers will do far more for you than any soundbar ever would...

If your TV has optical out, you might as well wire that into the soundbar. Anything's better than the TV's own speaker!

Well, almost anything.
