Assassins (1995) Dolby AC-3 [PILF-2200]

Japan import arrived yesterday in the posted.

Open Laserdisc is splendid condition with obi and nice outer sleeve with Laserdisc imprinted on it.

2 discs spread over CLV but side 3 could have been pressed in CAV as it runs for just under 30 mins.

Trailer plays as PCM Dolby Stereo at the end of the film.

Picture is fine a with nice warm colours. Framing as narrow vertical bars down the outside of the 1.85:1 W/S. No visible crosstalk detected.

A few close up scenes have some split lens diopter.

Dolby AC-3 is nicely open with wide spread over the LCR and some occasional smoothly transparent dialogue pans that remain clearly understandably with loud sound/fx and music score that appears wider than the spacing of the matched JBL LCR speakers sounds really nice.

Soft sounds on chapter 8, when a lady enters an elevator wearing a fur coat, gets it spray painted from behind the spray is heard gently moving from centre stage to stage left on the HF horns.

Bass mid is punchy with nice depth though to deeper rolling rumbles of smooth thunder during the opening of the film.

Split surrounds are used sparingly but effectively with police sirens approaching ahead over the LCR and though to the surrounds with uniform smoothness.

Dr Who: The Brain of Morbius - http://www.lddb.com/laserdisc/38878/BBC ... of-Morbius - got the laserdisk a few weeks ago, got round to watching it a couple of days ago. Decades since I've seen it, it's VERY silly but a lot of fun, basically Dr Who (the Tom Baker version) does Frankenstein, with brains in jars, Sarah Jane in peril (of course), a wacky cult of telekinetic nuns who want to kill the Doctor, etc. etc., and the world's most ludicrous monster, from the days when there were making Who on a minuscule budget and every second monster seemed to be made of fake fur, bubble wrap and papier-mâché, with an odd bit of perspex to look high tech.

Nice looking Assassins, this was always better than the one with Sharon Stone.

Watched this great surfing film Follow the Sun (1983) [5113-7]

Some light speckling on side 1 but i could deal.
Very rare, i wasn't even able to find any post on imdb from this director about his film.

Sealed HD-DVD Chronos (1985) [RB16009]

Image

Image

HD 1080p

Picture photography is splendidly breathtakingly clear and sharply detailed with nice colour rendering. Time-lapse photography spends though wondrous timeless historic locations around the world.

Image

LPCM 2.0
Dolby Digital Plus 5.0
Dolby Digital Plus audio commentary 5.1
dts HD 5.0

Sound mix seems to be 5.0 with no LFE.1 since this would have been mixed for the imax sound format Left Centre Upper Centre Right and Stereo surrounds with the missing upper-centre not included which is Dolby format shame with no proper format codes for consumer market.

Music by Michael Stearns using "the blaster beam" that was a musical instrument featured in STAR TREK THE MOTION PICTURE (1979) is used brilliantly. Some of the music has also been featured in trailer for "THE ABYSS" (1989).

Menus with features locations appearing on-screen.
Running audio commentary with director, production manager and composer.

I have just recently bought the Twin Peaks Blu Ray box set. Full restored in high definition it looks amazing, the pilot episode has heavy grain in places and there is odd patches where the print has faded slightly.
However when you get in to seasons 1 nd 2 the colour and clarity of image is impressive. It is strange to think that no one has ever seen the series like this, as it was shot on film and mastered down to tape for television audiences. Wonderful unique story telling, if you have not seen it, do so!

Been watching this great Tokosatsu Swift Hero Zubat: vol.1 (1977) [LSTD01095]
Almost like a cowboy/green hornet type.
No real super powers but has a whip and his guitar that holds his costume.
Leaves his calling card for the police to find on the bad guy.

New sealed brought yesterday and arrived this morning glad the LD postal service is still fast these days.

Wolfen (1981) [22019]

The thing I noticed when taking the LD out the sleeve was the thinness and lighter weight of the LD some Warner discs I have I think are a fraction thicker/heaver.

Image

Image

Using the Just Scan mode on the LG displayed a wider frame over the 16:9 which only cropped the wider portion of the image off.

Picture Laserdisc is framed at 2.35:1 (wider than the bluray release) colours look nice for the pressing from natural daylight to easy dark night scenes. The wolfen thermal vision effect looks creepy as it shows the point of view of the wolfs stalking for prey. Soft bits of dirt on the print that gives it the feel of a film is nice. if it was a HD picture I'd give it a 10/10 but for this LD pressing I'd give it a 8/10 for picture.

Image
Vintage CRT projector

Image

I doubt I'd upgrade to the bluray which looks a bit cropped on the scope framing by 10 or 12% i may have to look for a DVD and see if the pressing is about as same width as the LD for the Dolby 5.1 and "mega sound" that was featured on only a few early 80's Warner Bros films.

Image

Sound mix is fantastic with sound effects moving forwards from LCR and backwards to the matrix mono surrounds with a few subtler sounds moving between. Occasional few dialogue pans gives a film a good feeling of being there. Late James Horner score is class, with pre early STAR TREK II THE WRATH OF KHAN heard from the start and in action scene between packs of wolfens and humans near the end and few early notes for BRAINSTORM.

Image

Softer sounds from a clock ticking in a quiet room with a cat purring sounded realistic.
10/10 for sound mix.

Wolfen is one of my favourite creature feature movies, I have the one sheet poster and a variety of tape releases and the blu ray.

Deepwater Horizon (2016) based on true events of the tragic disaster of the offshore oil rig Deepwater Horizon, on April 20th 2010, where 11 crew men lost their lives. :(

Image

The first copy that arrived yesterday turned out to faulty with typical Dolby TrueHD sound dropouts and freezing up 1hr 7mins while laser struggles to track across the disc, seems like a fault with embedding encoding underneath the protective plastic coating so I ordered another one after filling in the form and amazon sent a free copy replacement that arrived this morning. Faulty disc is in the case on right hand side and the new copy is on left hand side.

There is still the issue of the Dolby TrueHD sound dropout and switching Sony BDP-S550 players HDMI off and switching over to the players own decoder 6/8 channel output via the RCA phones using the Dolby TrueHD presents no issues to the AVR internal multi-channel input.

Picture looks fine but I sort of noticed a typical artifact with the opening where (BOP) moves down beside the oil piping there is a sort of curved like images that just look odd at 0:01:46.

Image

Image

The opening again has a sort of eerier mystic creepiness with the score as the (BOP) checks out the oil-well-head for inspection and the single bubble that breaks though the surface tells the audience its unstable and can breach at any time.

I looked up the processes for drilling for oil offshore its technically engineering slow task to drill then fit a pipe and drill fit a pipe and have the pipe seal with the other pipe under thousands feet of water pressure then into deeper in the seabed surface to find the oil-well or the dinosaurs.

The sound mixing is evenly balanced with a sense movement around.
LFE.1 pressure builds up and explodes rumbling waves that kick, slam room and seats until finally growls down deeper into raging roaring fiery blazing inferno.

Listen a bit careful I'm sure I can hear some whizzing like sound/fx that was used in Backdraft (1991) at 1:00:27 where it moves from rear back surrounds to left front.

Arrived today Judge Dredd (1995) Dolby AC-3 THX [5261 AS]

Image

Image

Image

Picture looks laserdisc fine with strong colours a little fraction noisy in some reds but with a little - minus trimming of the red contrast and red tint the picture looks acceptable.

Dolby AC-3 dialogue is bit distant faint at times while sound effects and score tends to drown it out a bit but I can still understand what is being said. LFe.1 slams and rumbles with explosions or huge fireballs of flames while some weapons firing has a pulsing kicking effect.

Speed (1994) [0896785]

Missing LFE.1 track on this late pressing release was same as the early DVD release. The missing LFE.1 was later replaced on later second DVD special edition release 2002.

Picture quality colour is about the same as the first THX laserdisc pressing I owned many years ago.
