I made an amusing discovery this weekend. My new 2016 model 4K Panasonic TV can still decode teletext from laserdisc!

Sadly it only works when the player is plugged directly into the TV via RCA, so if I want teletext I have to bypass the lovely upscaling features of my AV receiver, but it's still a nice surprises. I just assumed that I wouldn't be able to access teletext features on LD anymore after upgrading my TV.

Teletext is long gone here in the UK but I'm guessing it's still used elsewhere in Europe so the feature is still included in European models.

The LD I'm demoing is Confidential Report (1955) [PLFMB 30881].

Teletext is long gone here in Norway as well. My father complained about it because that is how he always has checked his lottery numbers. My mother always read news and weather forecasts on teletext. I think many have fond memories from teletext in one way or the other, but Internet, and the ease of access to it, has made it obsolete. "Subtitles available on page 777" is a thing of the past on TV.

Ah the subtitles. They came in so handy when I lived in a shared flat at university. One of my flatmates would never stop talking so subtitles (888 here in the UK) were on almost all the time just so we could keep track of the TV while he talked.

I remember mainly using it to check the weather and cinema times. My current "smart TV" comes with a weather app built in, it's funny to see these apps replicating functionality that was available on old tube sets decades ago.

Another funny thing is that I were told teletext was used to sell bootleg movies on VHS. Our 2nd TV channel, that we got in 1992, had a marketplace section where people could put up advertisements. Kind of shows how little concern there was for piracy back in the day.

Ha ha, I hadn't heard about that. There were personal advert sections here in the UK too but I didn't see anything like that. In the UK they were mostly used for "lonely hearts" as far as I know.

Not like it was dominating, but still something people probably wouldn't post public today. Piracy has a lot more attention now than it used to. I'm sure there was a lot of different types of ads on the marketplace pages. :) Never used it my self, but sounds like it could be lots of fun browsing through.

Agreed, though it's still highly visible in some circles. I'm amazed at the number of bootleg concert DVDs still openly on sale every time I go to a record fair. I know bootlegging and the vinyl scene have a long history together, but I'm surprised it's still openly tolerated.

We've still got teletext in Sweden and even to this day it's widely used by many.

Good to know. I assumed it must be still alive and well somewhere. I do kind of miss it so I'm glad I've still got this small fragment of it on LD. No analog TV here in the UK since 2012.

And here we are in the progress of shutting down FM radio in Norway. TV got digitized in 2006. Hurry up!

2012 was just the year analog was switched off here, I didn't know anyone who was still on analog by mid 00s. I'm not sure if we still have analog radio here or not but I'd assume we do.

Ah, so you had digital and analog TV in parallel for a while? Here analog TV got shut down when digital were launched. Not all regions at the same time, but over a period of 6 months or so the whole country had switched over to digital. The same process is happening with radio now. Some regions already have shut down FM radio and gone fully over to DAB.

Teletext lived on even when TV got digital. The service got removed in the start of February this year.

Teletext is still very strong in Germany but I do not think it will disappear any time soon. I personally like it and use it on a daily basis.

I have a lot of S-VHS recordings from the early 2000s. The funny thing about those S-VHS recordings that the teletext signal was recorded, too. It isn't perfect
but you can still read the news from 16 years ago. I personally like S-VHS a lot and my recordings still look very good and fresh today. It was perfect for recording analogue TV.

Interesting! I assume the text has occational gibberish in it, but otherwise fine? I recall subtitles on analog satellite transmissions sometimes suddenly had wrong characters in the text and such due to poor reception or hiccups.

I just looked it up; digital was launched in the UK in 1998. I'd say by 2001 just about everyone was using it but analog wasn't finally turned off until 2012. They probably could have made the switchover a bit quicker.

I think you could do the same with VHS. When analog and teletext were switched off here in the UK there was a group of people trying to archive old teletext pages from VHS tapes.

You are right, samaron. It is not perfect but you can still read most of the news, sports, etc.

The good thing about the recorded teletext is I know the exact date and time of the recording :)

VHS does not record teletext. The resolution of the video signal is too low.

Now I have to check out if my Panasonic can use teletext to display captions. Interesting feature to know about. I don't use any form of upscaling so I can probably fully benefit from this.

Apparently PC processing can extract it: https://www.transdiffusion.org/2016/01/ ... ime-travel

Although not full teletext I'm sure I remember pulling up subtitles from things I taped from TV on VHS. I may be imagining it though as it's been a long time since I used VHS.
