I think forper is joking. He took the advice from someone to tweak the pots on one of his players and it's been reduced to a good doorstep ever since.

What a coincidence, my CLD-D504 broke! All is not lost though, I tweaked the pots on my CLD-S201 and it looks pretty good now and has been promoted to office laserdisc player.

Yeah don't start going willy nilly in those players. Those turns should also be very slight IF you do them, About 1/8th or less to see what to do without a scope etc. But you still take a risk without the use of the scope and reading the service manual.

The rest of the house in general isn't smoked in. I cleaned the walls once, that wasn't a pleasant sight after 15 years. Some things get more dirty than others in my experience. From your description, it sounds like especially the lubricant used absorb crud and start to degrade. Considering I own a farily expensive model, I wouldn't want to cause it to fail by lack of proper lubrication. Believe me it is not a pleasant experience removing that kind of sludge inside. The thing with the dvl unit was it looked... dried out in a way inside. Plastics looked deteriorated, dried out ... I don't know. Felt brittle like chips Tried to suggest less smoking today. The idea wasn't much welcome. Were in touch with another person who has worked with electronic service. He said the smoke also could get into the optics and basically ruin the laser for good. Not sure how high risk it is with smoking and the potential damage to equipment. Guess it would have to be a lot of smoke while the equipment is operating. Very rare the others smoke while it is in use. Doubt much get into my equipment.

i give my 1988 CLD-3030 a little exercise at least one per month, same for my two 1988 TOTL S-VHS decks, MITSUBISHI HS-U80 and JVC HR-S8000U.
i managed to completely dismantle my prime 3030 down to individual component blocks, and refit everything lubing all mechanics and tidily dressing all wiring, and generally learning along the way how to maintain and service the player, at least mechanically.
so, even though i'm a small fry in the remaining LD enthusiast community, with a rather tiny disc collection, i figure i'm in a better position than many in regards to keeping/maintaining my personal LDP, so long as the supply of good parts donor CLD-1030 and -3030 examples out there last...

yeah, i do baby mine, especially since i don't watch all that many movies in the grand scheme, and my modest LD collection is heavy in Anime and 1980's films i grew up with, and i've seen all of it in the past so many times that i only very occasionally get the hankering to watch most of them once more.
indeed, LD is more a working museum piece for me these days, as is VHS, now that my family has recently thinned our once colossal prerecorded VHS library way the hell down.
LD holds significant place in my heart, right beside VHS and BETAMAX, and the CLD-3030 will always have a place in my vintage/modern A/V system, but as a Home Video format, active daily driver it most certainly isn't...

They couldn't do anything, as in that they no longer have parts supply? Don't give up on it yet, down the line there could be a fix. Did they confirm what the actual problem was?

rein-o wrote: Less techs and no parts equals non working players. Sad news indeed but very true. The last players that will be working will be the common ones that sold in bulk and share the same parts. Those might not be the best players but they will outlast any of the high end ones when it comes to getting them repaired. That's why my HLD-X9 is reserved exclusively for digitization work only. I never use it for everyday usage because I want it to last as long as possible since there is no chance of getting it repaired where I live.
