Hello guys! I just had a quick question, my main and only player is a Sony MDP-600, and while it works somewhat reliably, I just found someone on craigslist selling a Pioneer DVL-919 for cheap. Now I know the stigma surrounding Sony players and even the DVL line of pioneer players, but my question is, if I can get it for cheap (it looks to be in great shape) would a DVL-919 be an upgrade or a good choice at least until I get a high end player much farther down the road? Any help is always appreciated, thanks!

Real issue is how many discs do you have now, how many do you plan to own and like primetarget said.
If its 20-100 get it.

The original poster should know that this guy is the only person on planet earth who feels, *very* strongly, that Sony LD players are something more that crap. Listen to what he says, then notice that nobody else ever says that. In fact, he only posted this because he loves to fight about this very topic.

To be fair, there were two other posters here on LDDb who actually like their Sony LD players.

Though three out of so many more, shouldn't be considered anywhere near a significant amount to base a broad opinion on.

Count me as one who had a Sony LD player and had exactly the same problems that all those who complain about Sony players complained about.

And yes, I went from a Sony MDP-A3 LD player to a Pioneer DVL-919 much like the original poster of this thread is planning on doing.

The DVL-919 had a MUCH better picture than the Sony.

I currently own 5 DVL-919 series players and I love them all. They are awesome LaserDisc players.

For DVD, I think they are only middle of the road - I use a Blu-ray player for DVDs.

The above is good advice from people who know what they are on about.

The DVL-919 will be a BIG jump in LD picture quality & if $100 (around £76 GBsterling here) is surely not a bad price.

If you do bag it good luck & enjoy.

Cheers.

I have always agreed that in general Pioneer players have much better PQ.

However SQ and reliability are a different story.

You see, I'm honest and unbiased about everything in life unlike some here who are indoctrinated to believe Pioneer is the ONLY choice.

I'm honest too. Since I actually owned a Sony LD player (brand new when I got it--not a used one) I speak from experience, not "indoctrination."

And again, my main player ISN'T a Pioneer either.

If a company's LD players picture turns into brown, smeary mess (with many, many documenting the same problem for this company's players) for no other reason than you are using it normally I wouldn't quite call that reliable.

Then there's stories like this . . .

http://forum.lddb.com/viewtopic.php?p=5422#p5422

http://forums.stevehoffman.tv/threads/s ... er.163580/

Any Sony LD player should be thrown in the garbage, no matter the year. Sony just had terrible luck with the LD format. Their players all stunk and had poor reliability, and the discs they pressed had a high rate of laser rot. Be wary of anything laserdisc-related that has the name Sony printed on it.

. . . there is proof to back up the such claims.

Go ahead and enjoy your Sony players. Just know that trying to convince anyone who has actually EXPERIENCED using one of them (like myself and many others here) that they're any good is like swimming upstream through a river of s**t.
