Recently I noticed my player taking awhile longer than usual to get to Side B. There are no unusual noises or anything. It seems to ride the track to the other side fine and spin up fine, but I guess maybe the focus takes 5-7 extra seconds when it's trying to find the start of the disc on side B.

I have been flipping the discs by hand instead because I have been really busy in life with no time to go about fixing the actual issue, but the last time I let it go to B by itself, it gave an F5 error and I had to shut the machine off then turn it back on to get the disc out and flip it myself instead.

Any knowledge on what I need to do by myself to fix the issue? :?

TIA everyone!

the error code seems to mean "error on focus at spin-up." quite vague.

i noticed it only happens on CLV discs. i think it must have to do with the high-speed rotation in CLV mode?

going to open her up next weekend and see.

This problem sounds to me like the centering of the side B plate is out of adjustment, it happens a lot with the dvl players, there is a little black screw at the end of the laser track towards the front of the player, next to the screw is a white plastic cam you adjust when the screw is loosened, be careful as its a minute adjustment. I remember some threads on this problem, try searching "side b centering" or similar.

Just going to move this up one more time in case anyone has any other advice.

I'll be opening it, cleaning and greasing it, etc. this weekend, and hope to resolve the issue.

Few things, you need to check the side a-b switch that could be the cause of your issues getting it to go to side b automatically.

Also clean the eye with a lens cloth or qtip with distilled water. Also when using the grease only do the round silver rail not the white track. Check the underside of the white side b track for cracking or dirt.

Could be side b centering but that is usually for skipping so not totally sure on that.

Another easy thing to do is to clean the ring on top of the spindle where the discs sits, if it's dirty the disc can slip and effect spin up.

R7G has a different ring on the spindle and won't slip.
Made out of a white material rather than the black ring.

Ah, wasnt sure on that, I know the earlier dvl styles had the 704 type ring, so they changed it on the R7G.

Thanks everyone.

I have only tried one disc but the A-B switchover took at least about 5 seconds less than it had before and no errors. In what is a good omen, I watched it with the player open as it made the switch, and as soon as the disc spun up to speed, with no discernible delay, playback continued from side B.

That came from just greasing the track and cleaning the clamp and spindle. Particularly the spindle took both ends of about 12 q-tips to get clean.

12 q-tips, where did you get this player, out of a bar???????????
Me thinks you spent too much time cleaning something and thinking it was a 15th century painting rather than a plastic piece.

haha, well it is what it is. the qtips were grey-brown til #12.

plus, once the player goes back in my rack i will be lazy again about pulling it out, so i pulled out all the stops in cleaning it.

I hear you.
I remember someone told me that the white material is something strong and won't wear out.
Makes me wonder if some discs that had bad labels were played on it before you got it and that's what you were cleaning??

There was definitely no wear on the white part, the clamp above the spindle. It's a hard plastic. But over the years, it has gotten a strange greenish tint (as opposed to other white parts in there that have yellowed like old plastic is wont to do).

Man, the R7G is easy to work around inside. It's so roomy in there. The clamp is just on a metal bracket that comes off via 4 screws. The spindle and laser rail were easily accessible by ejecting the tray. And of course every single thing on the main board is labeled.
