About three months back My MDP-650 started not playing discs on command and instead displaying the "OFF" error message on screen.

When this occurs there is a slight straining noise like the disc is trying to start spinning but there is something physically obstructing it.

So I got some time today and took the cover off and messed around with the clamps, cleaned them etc, no fix.

I now find that a light push on the edge of the disc after I press play gets the disc to spin up and play as normal. When I do this it feels like there is some release of pressure and the disc spins freely. I recorded a couple of (sorry upside down) videos of the problem:

Video 1: OFF error
Video 2: light push "fix"

Would anyone have an idea of what might be catching or holding the disc back initially? It seems like it should be an easy fix but I can't figure it out. There is nothing physical touching the disc except the clamp.

Thank you.

Sounds like you're SOL and I'm not talking about the satellite from AKIRA.
Have you looked for a service manual??
This is the problem when owning an off brand, you may think its great but when they go they go hard and you have nobody to help out :|

Really, it seems like it should be easy to fix?

No, what will this achieve?

What's an "off brand"?

If its such an easy fix why are you asking how to fix it

Nobody is posting about how to repair then that means your player is an off brand and there aren't enough people who know how to fix non popular brands of players.

As for the service manual, it could help you with trouble shooting, try and find one to see if you can fix it yourself.

I can only think of two reasons, #1 the spindle motor is aging and too much friction to get it started; #2 the power supply is not supplying enough current to start the motor.

I don't think it would be #2 if it changes speed with no issues playing a CLV recorded LD or if a side change works. I would suspect a spindle motor bearing issue #1. It's a SONY so no new part are available to fix it.

Thank you very much, as you seem to be the resident expert, I'm humbled by your post regarding my problem KRBAHR

I guess it may not be such a simple fix after all...

I DO have a DOA MDP-600. Would a spindle motor change out from the MDP-600 to the MDP-650 be feasible without expert knowledge?

The service manual contains the procedure for replacing the spindle motor. Read over it & decide whether you want to try it. It's not exactly simple, but on the other hand, if your player already doesn't work, what do you have to lose?

On the other hand, the "resistance" you report makes me wonder whether it might be the motor driver after all, or perhaps the servos. You might try swapping out the motor drive board first, which should be a simpler operation.

Thanks everyone except Reino for your replies.

I will investigate further and post back here if I make progress.

Sorry to me a service manual is usually something that goes way over my head when I look at it. Just endless board diagrams that make no sense to me.

Well you'll need to change that, especially if you want to keep owning off brand LD players like SONY.
Good luck with it ;)

If you want to work on LD players, the service manual is not just your best friend, it's an indispensable guide. These machines are complex enough that even a very experienced electronics service tech can do little without extensive documentation.
It's not shameful if this is not for you.

No, its not shameful at all if you don't want to deal with the service manual but there is a reason for it as you have posted publius.
And from his post above its more an attitude of what will it matter to use the manual.

Here is the service manual for the MDP-650:

http://manuals.lddb.com/LD_Players/Sony/MDP/

There are 2 of them so select whichever. I have not inspected the two to see if there is any difference. I will leave that up to you.

(I have downloaded the SM for my MDP-600 just to have it. You never know when an "off-brand" player could die.)

Well I was too inept to attempt a repair of the MDP-650. However it seems to have fixed itself. Now spins up discs 90% of the time again without any push assistance. Still a beautiful picture and perfect side change. Nice sound. Love it.
