Bought my first laserdisc player yesterday, a Pioneer LD-V2200. The seller said it was working and tested recently, so I'm thinking it might be something on my end.

The issue is that the image looks almost similar to how a VHS tape might need tracking adjustment. Not the static type stuff like disc rot, but more of a rolling image that sometime cuts out altogether (One TV will pop up with "Video" in the corner like something was just connected). However, the audio comes in fine and doesn't have any issues, and from what I can see of the video itself, it looks fine. I've tried with 2 LDs so far, one that came with the unit and one of my own. Same problem.

I've tested with 2 different TVs (A HDTV, and a Sony PVM CRT), different outlets/power strips, and various methods of display (Hooking up straight to the TV, or on the HDTV running it though a DVD/VCR combo that outputs via HDMI)

One thing I haven't had a chance to test yet is using the coax output on the unit, I don't have any around.

Hopefully this is an easy fix! I bought the player to transfer an old anime that supposedly has better video quality compared to the DVD release, and the person I borrowed the LD from needs it back soon.

If needed, I can upload some video later today. If for some reason it helps I'll link to the 2 discs I've tried

Addams Family: Criterion Television (1965) [CTV 1004L]
Outlanders (1986) [MJL-1005]

Thanks!

Edit: Tried it via coax, same issue. Took some video too...

That doesn't look good at all.

Looks like the tracking is out of sync and sometimes loses sync (the pictures dropping).
And the rolling luminosity bars could also mean defective electronics components.

Very VHS-like indeed.

I don't think this Player works normally, you should try to send it back and get a refund.

Agree, before you send it back try another cable, it could be a poor video cable you have or a weak laser?
Easy to change the cable, not so easy to replace the laser.

I've tried a few video cables already sadly. It was a local sale and I have the sellers contact info so I'll get in touch.

Thanks for the help! Back to my hunt of someone in the area with a player. Really just need to transfer this one film.

It sounds like the player is out of alignment... which is probably fixable but not for a first time LD user :(

Tasuke - have you seen this with any of your 3030's (this is basically an analog version of those)

I sent an email to the seller, I'll see what they have to say.

While I don't have experience with LD Players, I've done a few mods for video game consoles and building my own SCART cables so I have a small setup to work on electronics.

One thing I don't have however is an oscilloscope, which I think I saw that some people use for repair.

Can anyone point me in the right direction on where I can read up on this? I couldn't find any manuals for this particular model.

That is 60Hz interference in the picture, you have grounding issues.

I’d look near the sockets themselves. There could be a broken ground there somewhere from rough handling.

Well that can't be good. After moving everything into another room to try using a different outlet and getting the same results, I decided to peer into the vents and saw that there's some kind of...something on the board.

Someone got into the habit of... dropping their trimmed nails left-over inside a LD Player?

Insects? Mold? Decay?

There are ways of cleaning...whatever the hell that is.

Even in a perfect environment when I opened my first player after years there were some dead bugs in it, while playing for over 12 years.

Pop the top and clean er up.

Wow. I think you should get at least a partial refund there.

There's a good chance it can be fixed, but as I said before the V2200 isn't really a great choice for the first time aspiring technician. (My choice for that is the S104... it's simpler, there's the Pioneer training video on YouTube, and it's main parts are basically in every player from that point forward)

For most people these days, I'd agree that the best player is one you own that works. ;)
