for LD collectin purposes go for it; it is 150 $ now.....but if we are talking about skin tones accuracy compared to the original film, this is one of the worst LD releases....buy other format.

If you want the whitest skin tones on "Aliens" buy the jp LD (beating the Bluray); ...and if you want for example the cheapest best "2Fast 2Furious" - "Star Wars Episode 2/3" releases buy the DVDs which are superb transfers ;.......i mean the "transfer" work is the main theme,if properly done the Laserdisc can kick some asses

$150 is insane to me. I would understand the price tag if it were some lavish box set with a lot of substance to it, or if it were some rare title that can only be found on LD, but the matrix can be had on every other popular format for pennies

I think there are some other "late" LD blockbusters that make $150 look like pocket change sadly. Same story, you could get the DVD for like a dollar.

The Hong Kong LD I can at least kind of understand, since it's the best way to get the movie in the fullscreen format - which would just make me go "WHY!?" on anything that wasn't a super 35 film, like Matrix is. But it also costs like 4x as much, despite having burned in Chinese subtitles, so no, I don't really understand that, either.

From blam1's screenshot I'd say the LD and DVD were probably sourced from the same master, with the colors slightly toned down on the LD.

Once you factor in that the DVD was the first title to sell 3 million, and they didn't make enough of the LD at the time...

I'd guess the difference is solely down to the difference in presentation, composite vs component video.

To the best of my knowledge there is nothing special about the matrix LD. It's a pretty generic LD release as far as I know. The cover art is pretty plain, there is little to no special features (at least no special features that can't be found on the DVD), and its the exact same cut as the DVD with a little different color variation.

Maybe if I were a die hard Matrix fan I might think differently. I think the matrix is a pretty good movie but IMHO it's nothing too spectacular

“It’s a Laserdisc, dude!” is literally the only explanation needed. To some people that’s it. If they paid $150 for The Matrix its probably the best movie in their collection, if they even have an LD collection.

Whoa... talk about sticker shock! Well there's a list of movies I will probably never own on LD. I am pretty sure my wife would murder me in my sleep if I ever paid $2500 for a LD

Yep. At least it's random a** Hollywood trash that is super expensive. Meanwhile you can get nice Criterions for a reasonable price.

And you can still get LD only movies for under 30 bucks. With no DVD or Bluray releases yet.

The only downside I have found with the criterion collection is that most of them seem to be somewhat obscure titles. I've never heard of the majority of the movies I saw when I browsed through the list of criterion LDs

Apart from being some sort of a massive audiophile who has to have the best audio quality and it has to be the original theatrical mix, even at the expense of picture quality, there's pretty much no good reason for anybody to buy these titles on LD. All of these have a blu-ray release already too, so the mix itself would probably be the only difference.

If you want a laserdisc that costs absurd amounts of money and isn't on either DVD or blu-ray, look up the Japanese release of Wizard of Speed and Time.

WOW, I can't see spending that much.
Back in the day I sold my copy for I believe 75 or 100, but this was when LD was HOT, Hotter than HOT.

I believe most of those discs above that go for silly money were Japanese only pressing. I think Sleepy Hollow and End of Days were USA pressing and I was not aware Mission Impossible 2 ever got a laserdisc pressing. Other expensive ones include U751 and The last Brosnan Bond film.

I think the Hong Kong LD of Song of the South fetches similar four-figure sums. Unlike the Japanese release, it has no subtitles at all, but I think it was a rental only release which explains it's scarcity.

Maybe that's the case with the HK Matrix disc as well?
