CLD-3080 showing vertical lines even on the blue screen (idle screen). And playback shows more noise than my DVL-909 and CLD-2090. What should I check? Please check attached photo below.

Thanks!

EDIT: I don't really care much about the vertical lines on blue screen (idle). When I tried to play a movie (CLV or CAV), I'm getting these weird zigzag pattern on the screen. Looks interference, but not sure what's causing it. I swapped to my other four players (using the same set of cables) and none of them showed the issue.

Is this something that started to happen recently (as in that you’ve had the machine for awhile now) or did you just acquire this player recently and that’s what you saw the first time you tried it?

Could just be the cable taking interference from something. I noticed a low buzzing sound coming from my idle machine but swapping the scart cable fixed it. I tried regular RCA cables but they took even more interference and it was visible on the screen, similar to yours (but worse).

Looks like "jailbars" which are caused by electromagnetic interference.

I just acquired this machine. When I got it, the box showed some damages. Of course, the courier didn't care even it says fragile on the box. I wonder if it has something to do with the issue? I tried it on other tv, same. And this doesn't happen on my other four players.

It also shows like a zigzag pattern on movies. It it highly visible with dark scenes. To me, it looks like interference too, but not sure where to start. I tried a different cable, both composite and svideo, no joy.

If the issue shows up on the blue screen and playing a disc, my feeling is that there is something wrong with the video circuitry like possibly leaky caps. It could even be bad caps causing noise from the power supply section.

Can you look inside and see if you notice anything like that? A bad cap can either be leaking and leaving residue or see if the tops of them are bulging.

Not my expertise but you may need to get a shop involved. God knows what that machine has been through over the years but the good news is that main parts that matter are still working (e.g.: laser pick-up and spindle motor).

Is the disc CAV or CLV that you tested??
Can you post pictures?

Also I have a 3070 that started this issue but there is no problems with watching the LDs other than bad discs.

Just don't watch the blue screen, you are meant to watch the movies

@ldfan: I will try to do that. It's not easy to see all the caps because of the layout of the pcbs and other stuff inside. Thanks

@rein-o: Happens on both CAV and CLV. I tried to take a photo, but my phone was not capable enough to capture the issue. I will try a different camera tonight and post them here. Thanks

Not the blue screen but when watching discs you get zig zag on screen??
Sounds like something with electric then, probably not any tracking issue.

Blue screen I thought was from something different as like I posted before I have it on my 3070 flickering and lines but when the disc spins up nothing bad at all while playing.

@Rein-o: Yes, when watching discs. Tried several ones and it happens on both CLV and CAV titles. Weird because on the blue screen (idle screen), it doesn't show anything like that. Only the vertical ones as shown above. But when you play a movie, you get these weird zigzag pattern. It's like interference, but again, not sure what's causing it as my other four players don't have issue.

I want to say its the video cable, or the female ends on the player may be dirty and that's why you are getting the issue???

I tried three different set of cables. Also cleaned the female ends on the player.

Kind of sounds like you have two separate issues going on. But I'm no expert on repair/diagnosis.

Another possible issue besides what I brought (bad caps) could even be aged glue on the boards. I have a Mitsubishi VCR that exhibited odd scan line drops when playing tapes (but its blue screen and tuner looked fine) that wasn't caused by bad tapes. The shop I worked @ looked it over and they found that some of the issues (not all) was the aged glue starting to breakdown and causing some odd interference.

This may or may not be the issue with your LD player but it be worth a look (especially in the video section of the player).

Okay, did more research and I believe it's crosstalk that I'm experiencing. Is there someone here knowledgeable enough to give me some info on which pot to adjust? I also need to know which board I can find this adjustment pot?

Thanks!

If you said the inference is showing up on the blue screen as well (or did I not read that correctly originally), I would not think it's crosstalk since that's about the laser tracking the disc itself and thus the blue screen is not being read off the disc.

Anyway, a pot adjustment for video should be close to where the video output is located. I would start from there and look for pots that say things like "vert trck" or "focus".

Crosstalk would only be on CLV discs not CAV.
You said it was on both types.

And as above, it wouldn't be on the blue screen. It would only be on playback for crosstalk.

Unless you are getting crosstalk on the CLV discs and a different issue on the blue screen and both look the same???
But still CAV won't give you crosstalk, and you can adjust something but it could also be a warped disc.

Okay, I apologize for the confusion. I don't really care that much about the vertical lines on the blue screen. It was the main topic I posted about because none of my other players have that issue. But I also mentioned about the "noise" that I'm getting when playing LDs. Then after more research, I believe it's crosstalk. Now, I've only tried one CAV and got the same zigzag lines. I will try another one later today and find out.

I appreciate all the input from you guys. Thanks!

You need to clear the blue screen noise before looking at anything else. You have an oscillating noise in your player and it will affect everything. My guess would start with a bad power supply or try re-capping all the electrolytic.
