All I've had are rot free except a very very few.
Early anime pressings are from 81 or 82.

Macross may have been from 84-85 even.

I don't think boxes were started until the late 80s early 90s, most of the older releases will be single or double discs.
TV series' were released much later and a lot came out at the tail end of LD in Japan.

A quick check shows that the first TOEI release was 1983: Galaxy Express 999 (1979) [TE-D001]

I see very early PAL releases:

Captain Harlock: Episoden 1-4 (1978) [35-95118]
Adventures of Captain Future, The (1978) [LVPB 030]

Also:

Urusei Yatsura: Movie #1 Only you (1983) [LNK-505]
Harmagedon (1983) [AH009-35KD]
Golgo 13: The Professional (1983) [G78F0001]
Queen Millenia (1982) [G128F0004]

A lot of the old releases do not have the release dates, so it's down to checking (sequential) reference numbers.

Thank you, then, according to "street date" no anime disc was factory made before 1982;and it was a German pressing (capt.harlock) what a paradox!

The oldest one I have is Sanrio: Unico/Bird of Sorcery [AV060-1050], which is a listing that needs some help. It’s Unico and the Island of Magic (just one title, ユニコ 魔法の島へ, no idea about a bird) and it is the earlier analog pressing of the movie which hit Japanese theaters in July of 1983. I don’t know the release date of the LD but if I had to guess it came out pretty quickly since it was Sanrio. I wouldn’t be surprised if it was on LD that XMas.

The vast majority of anime on LD hit the same time the vast morjority of everything else hit LD, like 1990-1993. That was when those huge Japanese anime boxes started coming out and the fans bought them faster than they could watch them. In 1990 reruns and satellite and cable TV were nothing like they would become and almost no anime was ever rerun back then. Therefore a giant LD box of your favorite show as a kid was the only way to see it for even the 2nd time in some cases.

The earlier box sets were a bit too big and expensive but when they started coming out with the split boxes, where it takes two 7 LD boxes to do a year of of a show, those really took off and that was probably 1991 until about 1998 when the original Gundam finally was released for the first time on home video.

Oldest anime or oldest anime pressing?

This Unico shows as a 1989 pressing, not really a contender :-)

Julien

Edit: oops, didn't realize it's the older pressing you own!

In that case my oldest ones are from 1985 and 1986:

Lupin the 3rd: Cagliostro no Shirou (Castle of Cagliostro) (1979) [TLL 2023] - 1985
Angel's Egg (1985) [88LX-6] - 1986
Heidi: TV vol.01 (1974) [BELL-111] - 1986
Laputa, the Castle in the Sky (1986) [128LX-8~9] - 1986

If the postings on lddb are correct then Captain Harlock: Episoden 1-4 (1978) [35-95118] is the oldest anime of either PAL or NTSC.

https://www.lddb.com/search.php?adv_search=*&category=4&start=675&sort=date,asc
According to this there are other anime titles.

And I can say this is correct Adventures of Captain Future, The (1978) [LVPB 030] As that FHE logo was very early and that's around the correct time frame for this disc.

There is a digital audio reprint, that must be the 1989 one. I have both and to clear this up I’ll write some updates for the DB.

And yeah, I meant oldest pressing. I have way older anime than 1983. :)

Edit: I’ll do a real submission later but for the moment...the other version I have is LNK-528 from somebody called Rainbow Video Disc. Mono, analog, Laservision logo, CLV, 91min (reprint is 92min), ¥9800. The last time I watched it I think I remember no rot but crap video. Foxing can be seen right through the color cover. It’s probably the oldest functioning disc I have. No CX logo.

Both of these are made totally worthless however by the Discotek Blu-ray of both Unico films which is jaw dropping lush and is pretty near the apex of pre-otaku driven anime, IMHO. It wasn’t quite so obvious on HBO back in the day but this is very neat clean production, more like Disney than anime insofar as they manage to keep the dirt off the cels and colors consistent all throughout. It’s pretty obvious they were gunning to make this potentially a global hit on the Disney scale, even if its overall J weirdness would never allow that. It’s also probably the best thing that came from Sanrio Films which is a really interesting company and the way this all ties into Tezuka is interesting as well.

It’s also TOP WIERD so check it out if you’re into that. It really gets maximum wierd at times. I’m a huge fan of this movie.

My oldest is the 13th Toei release, Sayonara Galaxy Express 999 (1981) [TE-D013] from 1984.
As far as rot goes, the video quality was excellent when I tested it with no evidence of rot.

i always did want to get serious about Anime LD collecting, but there's just too little money, and far too many directions for it to go.

that said, most of my existing collection is PIONEER and AnimEigo, along with most of the FHE ROBOTECH MACROSS SAGA,
and an IMAGE and CENTRAL PARK MEDIA/U.S. MANGA CORPS disc or three thrown in for good measure.

none are probably older than 1994 or so.
either the first MOLDIVER volume, second TENCHI MUYO! vol. or the original DOMINION TANK POLICE double-disc set
are probably among the very oldest releases i currently own.

oldest Anime itself that i have, however, is likely the first vol. of the mid-90's Japanese LD release
of the mid-70's HURRICANE POLYMER T.V. series.

i never would have been interested in owning this specifically, mind you, - though it is a pleasantly corn-ball show -
but it happen to come in that large-ish Anime LD lot i picked up back in 2009-ish,
so it was something of an awkward-but-amusing diversion, even for this largely Young-Otaku-Whipper-Snapper of an Anime fan...

Hand made Cel animation (till year 2000 +/-) is a form of art ,and we can watch and appreciate it forever no problem....

Remember one french producer and animator of "Ulises 31" (Jap-France anime tv series) talking in the DVD premium edition about being a Grandpa and enjoying every single episode of the series

I’d love to hear that commentary. I can’t understand much French though.

I have watched it again...he is Rene Borg creator ,animator and cinematographer of Ulises 31 concept who directed only the first episode talking sadly about being retired from direction by DIC and Tokyo movie Shinsha producers;...at 75 years old he still wanted to redirect the entire tv series he loved on his own way !

Another famous japanese co-productions directed by him; Once upon a time...space

It's a different title in English isn't it? I might have encountered this but not sure. Also was there 2 shows made that were animated differently?

In the US the title was "Misteries of time" or "Ulises 31 misteries of time"

Yes, there are two versions of the first episode; paradoxically a more japanese cute style one with Rene Borg at direction and character design (with japanese animators) and the "regular one" with a more western style and a polished Odysseus spatial ship.

People dont know that Shoji Kawamori colaborated on the final Odysseus design and the "Thais" character was by "Shingo Araki"

I don’t remember that name from when it ran on Super Sunday or whatever in the US. I think it was Ulysses 3000 or something like that.
