You know what I miss about oldschool era of PC gaming? Those cheap CD-ROM collections of everything whoever published them could download from newsgroups or whatever, which in addition to game demos also included user-made content; absolutely pointless now but invaluable to anybody without an internet connection. Hell, not even so pointless now because a lot of the user-created content in particular is not mirrored anywhere so if you're on the look for something specific, your choices are either hunting down the physical discs (which hopefully means you know what disc it's on), or the archive.org collection.

Not always because of the content itself, although they would occasionally contain a diamond in the rough, but because there was zero quality control so you'd often find your hands full of content like "my first Doom map" or sound mods that just had the creator replace everything with fart noises. But also because they still would not be able to fill an entire CD-ROMs worth of data, so they'd use the most random stuff imaginable as filler, like instructional videos that most likely would have absolutely no use to whoever actually bought these things.

I'm still on the lookout for a couple of those sound patches for Doom!

The old internet is dying faster every day. Colleges are purging old webpages from the 90s, people are dying off, sites that have been perfectly fine for 20 years are now broken because they aren't secure enough. Just think of all the stuff trapped in Real format.

If there's something you want to keep forever CDROM is the way to have it. That and paper. Paper is incredible.
