Hi all,

I have a Pioneer DVL-909 that has a PSU failure, no power.

It seems to be in DVD mode as if I hand wind the motor the DVD tray will pop out.

My question is how can I manually get the LD tray to pop out so that I have access to the PSU?

Any help, with this, appreciated.

BP.

OK seem to have sorted this, moving the lower pickup back to the middle now
allows the main tray to open!

Looking at the PSU, so far R101 and R103 seem to be Open Circuit.

Cannot seem to get a decent reading from the Bridge Rectifier either! That too looks open circuit!

I do hope others can chime in and you get this sorted.
These are easier to work on players but sounds like something got jolted in shipping or moving? Or didn't get into the final closed position before being powered off.

Can anyone confirm the values of R101 and R103?

R103 (right) I assume is 4.7ohm 5w?

R101 (left) I assume is 1/2 or 1W?
Note: R101 is across the AC input.

In all of the DVL players I've repaired, I've never seen these particular components go bad. Of course anything is possible, but before any of these would go bad, I would have expected fuses to blow first. There are half a dozen fuses on the DVL PS boards. In dozen power supplies I've worked on, fuses have been the culprit every time.

VWR1287- 240v European

Something really weird has gone on!!

All of the fuses on the secondary side are OK.
The main 3.15A fuse is also OK.

BUT

On the primary side R101 and R103 are Open Circuit.
Bridge Rectifier is open or 26Mohm!
Q101 looks short. (not a K2333 as expected 9N50C?)

Also looks like the diodes are open too! D103, D104, D106 and D153.

Does anyone know what D153 is? it states a Pioneer part VZF1045 but I cannot find
a reference or replacement.

I have managed to source D103 (2.7 Zener), D104 (1N4148TR switching), D106 (18v Zener).
I have sourced K2333 (VZF1056) Q101, Q150 and Q151.

Once I get all the bits I will rebuild the primary side..

Can confirm Q101 was short circuit. Q150 and Q151 are OK.

Actually I am not sure if the diodes are Open circuit!

Just tested a new diode with my DVM nd this shows 'OL' in both directions!?

Confused..

I just remembered reading that there is some type of piece you have to clip out.
Can't remember if that's for this player or another player, please do a a search to find out which player that was.

Could have been the 919?? or??? If I remember it was a DVL player but not sure of yours.

OK!

R101 (OC), R103 (OC) replaced.

D101 (OC on Negative side) replaced.

Q101 (SC) replaced.

Rebuilt and now the unit is running again!

Wow, glad to hear.
Do you have any idea as to how it was damaged from before?

Hi there,

I have no idea how it was damaged as I bought it as a non-working item in the hope that I could fix it.

I like tinkering with things that have a possibility of being repaired. I recently had a Pioneer CLD-D925,
again that was non-working, and after a replacement Slider Motor Holder and belt the unit worked really well.

I already have a Pioneer CLD-D925 and thought this would be a decent unit to complement it.

;)

Some that used to be on the forum have told me in private that the 909 and 700 are nice LD players, but very early DVD so don't expect much from that.
Glad you got it working, enjoy collecting.

Good job. Might give me some ideas now on how to approach a busted Marantz Receiver I've been working on.

I remember talks about the NTSC/PAL DVL-909 being different in terms of the power supply layout, correct me if I'm wrong.
You are right about a component that needs to be clipped out. It's the D105, next to the fuse on the DVL-909. It function as an arc suppressor to protect the circuits, as I have been told by Kurtis Bahr. Leaving it out doesn't protect the player, so it should be replaced.

I am in exactly this pickle myself. But you go on to say:

I've tried winding the laser (I think it's the DVD one) both half way back, and right back into its 'cage', but this doesn't seem to affect anything - turning the belt pulley at the front still only moves the DVD tray.

I'm wondering if it's the position of the yellowy-white plastic piece in this picture (not my picture):
Image (right-click and View Image - can't work out how to embed it!)
Mine seems to be in the opposite position to this picture - ie to the left - but I cannot work out what else needs to be pushed, pulled, or turned in order to allow it to move to the right.

Any help would be gratefully received :)

No advice..? I'm going to have to start dismantling the whole thing at the weekend if I can't slide the tray out, and I really don't want to do that  :D

I think there are tabs to remove??
I'm no tech and sort of remember reading about that.
Good luck.

For what it's worth, I did find out how to slide out the big tray on a powerless machine, which I'll share here for posterity...

Wind in the small tray using your finger on the white pulley with the belt around it, then keep on winding.

Very slowly this will start raising up the whole laser assembly. Keep going and when this is fully raised, the white plastic item pictured in my previous post is then free to move from side to side. Push it towards the centre of the player (actually the spring may pull it that way, I can't recall now), then begin winding the pulley back in the other direction.

The laser assembly will drop, and after that keep on winding and the big tray will come sliding out.

Hey presto, I have access to the power supply board. I might be asking a question or two about that later once I've done some tests :-)
