Hi all!

It’s time to get into laserdiscs again!..and dust off my movies!..

Pulled out my broken cld-53 and picked up a Barely used DVL-91 off eBay and will be hooking it up soon as i just redid my a/v closet...I got a b&k rf demodulator to go with it!

But

I also picked up a mint condition DVDO iscan VP50 local to me and was wondering if anyone can recommend the best setting for the VP50 to get the best image out of a laserdisc on a 1080p plasma.

I did some searching and can’t seem to find if anyone else has made a post with their optimal settings..if so could someone please point me to the post..

Thanks in advance
Cheers

There really isn’t any setting on vp50 related to laserdisc picture quality. You can adjust contrast, brightness and color but you shouldn’t use someone else’s settings as these are display specific.

just some things but :
Deinterlacing : film mode for 90% of movies.
Color Space : 4.2.2
Auto aspect ratio : off
1:1 frame rate : on
frame rate : lock (60hz)

other thing :
if your screen is not so old, I recommand you to watch 3/4 movies in 480p. (VP50 resolution -> 480p)
VP50 is a good deinterlacer, but a bad upscaler (ringing). Then it is generally better to let the upscale work to your screen.

True, and if you adjust chroma/hue on a modern display you'll break the gamut. Pretty much what color matrix you see is what you get, unless you're given clear alternatives (like on the Panasonic sets where you can choose between BT.601, BT.709 etc).

This is great Mimi, you know your stuff of course.

Would these recommended settings change for using a CRT like my Sony KVHRM36 with super fine pitch comb filter?

In fact, I don't know so much ^^
I also don't know anything about CRT...
I just know, that most of digital screen will have v-sync problem if you don't lock framerate. But maybe CRT don't need that.
Auto aspect ratio is a pain in the *ss when you use old format like VHS or LD.
The original color space of LD should be 4.2.2, then the best should be to pass through, if the screen accept it. (I am not really sure about though... need someone to confirm it)

Thanks for the reply Mimi, I'll try out your earlier recommended settings and see if I get an improvement.

Right now I just use factory defaults basically and adjust each movie to OAR using over and underscan. I had previously thought that VP-50 wasn't much capable of actually improving LD's picture and I saw it as a nice switcher and scaler that at least wouldn't degrade the picture any. I'm very happy with the picture I get right now but very interested that I might be able to improve it.

I don't really understand what deinterlacing means but I know I can play with the aspect ratio until it's perfect and that's "scaling" right?

Okay I'm playing back Return of the Jedi CAV definitive right now and it looks great to me.

I switched to film mode and there may be an improvement here, not sure yet.

However some options like color space and auto aspect ratio are't available for me、 I guess because I'm I'm not outputting HDMI, but RGBHV.

Well LD looks as great as ever on my setup and I'm settling in for some classic Star Wars action tonight..thanks again. .

I don't really remember about auto aspect ratio... maybe it's only on DVDO Edge.
As you have a CRT, I don't think deinterlace will do anything for you...
What is the maximum resolution of your screen ?

Okay, thanks.

I don't know what the max resolution is, it doesn't say in the manual. I've heard it's like 720 or something?

No auto aspect on dvdo. Only lumagen has that.

Component can do 720p/1080i. Component with h and v sync that is 5 cables can do little over 1080p at up to 72hz.

Hello

I have a doubt

I am Iscan DUO V.2.41 (latest version)
I am using

When stopped through Iscan DUO
The screen is shaking

Is there a function of TBC in Iscan DUO?

Is that a useless thing?

I want to know whether it is normal

It appears in the connection below

hello powerofld !
I think that the screen will shake in still mode with any video processor, except IDK video processors. I don't know why.
Even lumagen can't stop the screen shaking in still mode.
IDK is a really really strange creature...

mimylovesjapan

Thank you :D

mimylovesjapan

Thank you

I was relieved to believe that it was not a malfunction

To prevent shaking I
It is improved by using IDK VSC - 02 or by putting FOR.A FA - 395 in between

FA-395
Has the function of TBC

I think that it is the influence of TBC

Hello

DVDO iSCAN VP50 (not pro)
Was changed from V.1.00 to V1.09

Video is output from analog RGB = OK
However, no image is output from HDMI output = NG

Removed power
Initialized

I tried variously but only HDMI output is not done

Menu operation is no problem from analog RGB output

Why?
