For someone who's going to be watching Mobile Suit Gundam (0079) for the first time and the rest of the Universal Century series, what order would you watch the Universal Century shows: in chronological order or in the order in which they were released?

Order of release. Prequels and sequels lose most of their worth if seen out of order of release.

I have to say though, if you’ve never seen any of this and you plan on blasting through a decade of Gundam in a week most of the appeal will be lost. A person needs time to process that stuff. It’s not Naruto or whatever. I suggest a show every six months max. If you get the urge then rewatch. That way you’ll spend at least a year or two on the 80s stuff. You’re supposed to have questions in your head or ideas of where things are going when you move from Z to ZZ for example and if the gap between them is only the running time of their intros and outros then the Newtype portion of your brain will never develop and the gravity of the earth will drag your soul down forever. You’ll know all about that stuff when you get to 1987.

I forgot to add that both the OG TV series and the movies made from it (I, II, and III) are excellent but if you’re only going to watch one then watch the movies. The show is loaded with compromises but the movies repack everything and quite a bit of the animation is redone much much better than it was the first time, particularly the end of the final movie.

I always found the original series to be the best, ZZ to be horribly underrated and 08th MS Team to be horribly overrated.

Zeta you are very on point here as I would expect for commentary from you on Gundam. ;) I still haven't opened some of the UC stuff I got, you gotta burn it slowly.

Oh and 08 MS Team is mostly for people that aren't Gundam fans. It's not really a typical Gundam show at all, a gaiden basically.

I get the impression that 08th MS Team's popularity is largely due to similar reasons as Gundam Wing; it's not only the first Gundam show a lot of people in the US have seen, it's probably the only one they've seen.

When CN first broadcast the original series, didn't they end up marathoning a huge chunk of the entire series because of 9/11? That can't have done the series any favors, when it was already facing resistance from all the fools who get hung up on things like animation not being up to a modern standard.

08 has a punters plot but at the time the more mecha obsessed fans in my gang were very excited for the mechanical aspects of it. Until that time the only cannonical depiction of ground work like that was in that slide show on All That Gundam. The drop ships, ground Gundam, and non humanoid ground units were very exciting. We were also very glad that it wasn’t Gundam Wing.

It’s another 0083 and that’s fine. Not as good though.

I'm getting ready for a rewatch/fill in the gaps I never saw once my Japanese improves.

I will always go with release order, it's the way it was original seen and processed by original fans so it's the way I want to see it. It might even bring back some of the memories of being excited for a new sequel back in the day.

I remember the hype around 08th MS Team. A lot of rumours it was going to be about ground troops, the infantry fighting next to the Mobile Suits, a real war story. What we actually got was pretty dissapointing.

Never seen the second half of Zeta or any of ZZ, looking forward to both.

In the last two years I've finally completed series' I always meant to. I watched the whole of Maison Ikkoku and SPT Layzner. Well worth it. Last year I did a complete Macross rewatch over 3 months (SDFMTV, DYRL?, TB2012, TV Special, Macross Graffiti, Macross II.) Currently REALLY enjoying my Zambot 3 LD box set. A great primer to restarting Gundam. But yeah what Zeta said is so true, you can't rush it or marathon old anime. A couple of episodes a day tops and really let it sink in. I'm currently still pretty shocked at the bleakness of the last couple of episodes of Zambot 3 (ep17). I can't believe how dark it is, even for Tomino. I'm impressed by the level of creative freedom expressed. I'm very impressed by the kaiju too. Yep, this was so much the basis for Evagelion. A must watch for anime mecha fans.

I've been doing the same. Anime and live action. City Hunter, Babylon 5, Farscape etc... It's made much easier to do as modern TV shows basically don't interest me at all. Everyone seems to say TV shows have never been better but I strongly disagree. Maybe this is just part of getting older, idk.

I really want Maison Ikkoku BDs and given all the old anime being re-released in the last couple years it doesn't even feel that farfetched now. I mean crap, I have Kimagure Orange Road pre-ordered right now and I'm just waiting to pre-order Giant Robo. Both on BD. Sublime.

It depends on the anime for me even with older stuff. Some stuff is fairly bingeable, others I prefer the slow burn.

I realized years ago that any show, no matter how good, would just become tiresome if you just chug it hours and hours on every day, especially if it's over a hundred episodes, so what I started doing is I actually watch several episodes of several different shows on roughly daily basis, in a specific order, with anime taking turns with western productions, usually animated but sometimes live action as well.

It's certainly made many of the more repetitive shows slightly more bearable, but it's still not enough to save some of the worst dregs I've had to sit through.

It sounds like you’ve basically made your own TV station. I’ve thought about doing something like that.

I’m cautiously optimistic. I predict a much happier ending. The animation looks cheap, like that Thunderbolt guy is doing it again. I haven’t checked the staff yet.

I can’t say I’ve ever noticed Shukou Murase before this. As a key animator for the G Gundam intro (in addition to many many other credits robot and not) he certainly has the experience. We’ll see.

The main mecha in this arc are of the “impossible to animate” variety so we’re probably stuck with CG mecha which means I’m unable to ever see it as an A+.

We’ll see. Three times we’ll see, it sounds like.
