I just bought a CLD-980 that was sold as broken. The belt that moves the pickup had slipped off, and the laser was visibly dirty. I've cleaned it well inside and out and re-oiled/greased it. Now I just need to see if I should keep it or keep my CLD-1070. It is a battle of the low-end players, but I like these single-sided players. It is also nice to have a cheaper player around to test discs. I know the CLD-980 is a year newer.

Right now I would keep it.
Working players will be less and less on the market.

No matter which is better, keep them both, unless you feel you can sell it and make a crazy profit I would just keep it.

You make a good point, and I definitely have no problem keeping players. I have a CLD-99, CLD-3080, CLD-D503, and these two right now. On the other hand if I did sell it, I would make a nice profit to put back into another player or LD lot.

I've had two CLD-980s over the years and every time I regretted getting rid of it. If I ever get another I am definitely keeping it. It was my first player after all.

I think the 980 and 1070 are pretty darn similar internally.

If you look @ the pics on-line to compare both of the players back panels, I would actually assume the 980 is basically a 1070 without the nice LED display that shows functionality and time. And the only real difference between a 1070 and 1080 is an extra set of AV outputs.

However, from what I recall back in the day, I would have sworn that 980 was built with less weight which I thought explained why they seemed to vibrate more than the 1070 or 1080. I could be wrong since I haven't seen either player since the 90's.

the 980 might be lighter as it has that honeycomb bottom that seems to be thinner I think.

They do appear very similar on the insides. I was able to clean and grease it with ease from my CLD-1070 experience.

Both have the honeycomb bottom. I would say that they weigh similar. I don't have something to properly weigh them, or I would post the weights.

Here are their boards for comparison:

Found some spec sheets just now in my archives to compare...

Model /////// weight //// video s/n //// audio s/n //// audio dynamic range

CLD-1070 //// 16lbs, 8oz //// 46db ///// 100db /////// 95db

CLD-980 //// 16lbs, 12oz //// ???? ///// 105db /////// 97db

So it would seem that the 980 might have better specs. :o Still trying to find the video s/n for the 980 but even if it was better by 1db it would not make much a difference IMHO.

One thing I have noticed on both of these players are cracks on the white gear rail, or "rack" (part of part 102 in the CLD-1400/CLD-1450 manual). As the pickup traverses the rail, it can bend in quite a bit, but I have not noticed this causing issues with playback as of yet. I reassembled the 980 yesterday and began to watch a disc, and I noticed a high pitched whirring sound throughout playback. So much so that I called it quits and transferred the disc to my CLD-3080.

It seems that this sound is coming from under the disc, possibly because the pickup is too close? I'm not sure. I thought it would be a good idea to see if it would play CDs, which it does not. I have the same issue with the CLD-1070. I managed to get a (really old) dual-trace oscilloscope last weekend for free, so I'm going to try to align the 1070 and 980 this weekend.
