Just the color difference.

APD-1 is black, more common model.
APD-2 is champagne/silver.

They are identical except one is in black finish and other gold. I think the gold version is Japan only for 100V. Black ones have multi-voltage versions. Gold one are rare and a good match if you own an Ld-S9, R7G or HLD-X9.

Well.. a good match cosmetically but as already stated; functionally the same. Otherwise, I would think mixing black with champagne would not bother many people. :)

I was gonna ask because I found these on eBay, glad to get the answer because I don’t have a demodulator and was wondering what the big difference was.

I have the APD-2. I have to use a step down plug with it but that is all. It functions the same afaik.

My CLD-D925 is black, the colour scheme mismatch doesn't bother me at all.

The User Manuals (in Japanese only for APD-2) are nearly identical as well.

That reminds me, I need to open up my APD-2 and take a photo of it so we can determine what the story is with soldering the voltage jumper.

Just got one of each, will open them up and compare inside carefully for differences.

Awesome thanks Julien. So looking at the APD-2, where do I need to bridge the jumper? Is it over at the JP1 spot there on the board near the power lead?

I'd like to mod mine to use 220/240v instead of a step-down plug thingy. My APD-2 doesn't have a voltage selector switch on it alas.

EDIT: Just thinking as well, it may be possible to change out the hardwired plug too? Snip off the end of a kettle lead, push out the wires from the existing connector/harness and plumb the new lead in? Could be an issue with Earthing though? Maybe I'll just leave it, I have the expertise of Rod Hull when it comes to electrics.

I don't know about the voltage change, but changing the AC cord shouldn't be hard.

Both appear to be using a fairly common (for double insulated devices) 2 wire plug on the board, you should be able to find a donor 240v type cord with the right plug in something electrical that has been junked locally. Not all electrical products will have the plug, some will have the 2 wires soldered to the board instead. But if you look inside the likes of junked amps/receivers, VHS/CD/DVD players etc you should find the cord you need soon enough.

The retainer/strain block on the back plate of the decoders should push upwards so you can slide it off the plate, it might split apart after being removed from the plate too so you can reuse it on the donor cord.
