I am looking to get a slight upgrade to my laserdisc player, even though I already have 7  ). This is more from the standpoint that I want to have another higher end (but not top) machine at home.

Currently, my laserdisc player chain is VP-900 (chroma noise reduction) => DMR-ES2 (comb filter) => DPS235 (TBC) => IN1508 (scaler).

Considering I would like to keep CD functionality and I want to have LD-G, what options are available to me? I'm thinking one of these two are the best options. I'm not ready to go to a Hi-Vision, at that point it would be better off to buy a video processor (lumagen/crystalio).

I know the CLD-HF9G would be very similar to my CLD-79, but it would have LD-G and perhaps a slight amount less noise. The CLD-R7G would probably be better though s-vid, but then again I have a noise reducer in my chain. How is its composite output on sharpness?

Subjectively, I really like the looks of the HF9, but I've also read on the forums that the R7G has less smear. Thoughts?

I think DVL-H9 would be a good option too. It has the same updated digital electronics as the R7G but lesser noise on its analog stage. I am not sure if it decodes LD-G. Audioboyz and pbiancardi owns or has owned own. They can further comment.

Note: There are only 2 none English language titles with English LD-G.

Don't know about RG7, but CLD-HF9G is certainly not a good choice. It was my first player, and I wasn't so happy whith it. Especially smear is really strong. Also, build quality is very poor.

AFAIK the HF9G is the same as the CLD-99 but with a built in LD-G decoder.

The R7G has great S-Video output. If you can pair it with good, external NR you're looking at a solid choice. Not saying that it's necessarily better than the other mentioned players though.

R7G was very nice, I had one, but you must run the S-Video.
No smear at all, some say its more of a DVD image but I was very happy with it.

H9 is like an "R7G built like an X9". Definitely a lower noise picture than the R7G, same comb filter, and like the R7G has LD-G if you want it. I think a little more expensive on average than the R7 but I recall there being quite an overlap in their pricing too so if you're watching YJP don't leap straight in - get a feel for the pricing and strike when the time is right. It will be more expensive to ship though as it's quite a bit heavier.

I'm not a fan of the 99, 70x? series, or any of that line of players due to the smear.

You also didn’t like the 959 so...not sure how good something needs to be to be good enough for your setup. :)

That is more or less the same as mine, except my specific model doesn't have the video gain knob. Mine is the non-A, but both the A and non-A came in models with and without noise reduction. The VP900 I have is w/noise reduction. I use it for chroma noise reduction, and it works really well, but you have to be judicious with the amount as higher levels introduce ghosting. That is partially why I was interested in the composite output on the CLD-R7G. My VP900 only has a composite in.

If you don't mind my asking, why did you get rid of it?

Second-hand goods of HG 9 G and HF 7 G have many breakdowns

E3 error etc
It is due to pickup sensor error

The pickup lens should have been plastic

Cleaning with chemicals clouds the pickup
