The Treasure of the Sierra Madre

Fantastic film. LD itself was fine, I would guess the BD is more cleaned up. Lots of old film type stuff that I don't really mind.

Bridge On The River Kwai

An extremely well made movie that has some interesting things to say. Oh and that ending, holy s**t.

Most recent LD spins were Raiders of the Lost Ark and Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. My first time seeing each. I liked Raiders well enough but didn't care for Temple of Doom at all.

Saw Yorgos Lanthimos' latest film The Favourite at the cinema recently, which was great. One of my favourite directors.

Watching Star Trek Discovery as the episodes come out, as well as slowly working my way through Seinfeld and re-watching Cowboy Bebop.

I’ve watched Toast of London on Netflix five times through, the whole thing. It makes me laugh like crazy.

Temple is kind of an acquired taste.

But wow, seeing these for the first time in 2019. Wild.

I have to admit, it is in fact one of those shows...where you take a real life comedian and base a sit com on his actual life ala: Maron, Lady Dynamite, Everybody Loves Raymond, half the shows on TV in 2017, etc but since it’s Matt Berry it’s so weird you can’t even tell.

Also check out Snuff Box, which is another show of his where he and an American are royal executioners, hangmen, in modern day Britain somehellhow.

And Garth Marengi’s Dark Place which spoofs Stephen King and crappy 80s horror.

I think The Bobo and After the Fox are better than the PP films but they do have their moments.

Well.
I watched:
A Shot In The Dark.
The Return Of The Pink Panther
The Pink Panther Strikes Again
Revenge Of The Pink Panther

Hard to say as I don't feel these are that "amazing"
I was telling my wife a story about when I was around 10 I loved the PP cartoons and was talking to this guy
who was about 7 years older than me.
He said those films were the funniest films ever made and I could never get it.
Then I picked up this set and while they do have moments they aren't the best thing since sliced white bread.

If I had to pick one of these that I watched I would say Shot in the dark.
George Sanders was dialing it in so hard that I don't even know why he bothered to show up, must have needed the money
really badly.

I do feel that After the Fox was the best out of all of these, just pure genius.
And Strangelove was as always amazing.

Watched A Star Is Born, (1954) [11335], never seen it before, pressed before WS was a thing. Good movie, painful to watch P&S and the audio seem to be (imho) mixed incorrectly.

I think I had a similar experience. I never grew up enough to like these movies. They remind me of Jerry Lewis or Rowin Atkinson when they aren’t funny, like in the Mr Bean movie or those horrible Johnny English POS which *should* be funny but sure as hell are not. Copious mugging and akward “comedy” moments that never end. I think the stuff might just not be funny. I find myself hating the Inspector for the benefit of his poor costars.

Come to think of it when I was starting to watch them not too long ago I believe I stopped after the 2nd one. It was better than the first iirc but I had no desire to continue.

I watched The Ghost and the Darkness last night. Normally I wouldn't mention this film but the surround mix ( I watched the German Blu-ray ) was outstanding. Wow. No wonder it won an oscar for best sound effects back in the 1997.

Just watched Hard Target with Jean Claude Van Damme (PAL, french).
As a movie, it is not that great but Lance Henriksen is good in it and Van Damme's stunts are impressive too, he even puts K.O a snake by punching it, made me laugh a lot.
But I have to say that the Dolby surround mix on this one is fantastic, great spacing of sound, almost sounded like a true 5.1 source was being played by moments, like when helicopters flyby the camera or explosion debris land behind the camera.
The image is great too (it's a Pioneer LD).

Conan the Destroyer.

I can't stop thinking about what somebody once said about it, calling it "the best dungeons & dragons movie", and thinking how appropriate that is. You've got a band of characters who all fit specific tabletop RPG character archetypes on a quest for some sort of a magical doohicky involving enemy encounters, some large, some small.

I had a hard time with Hard Target (Woo Goes West). On one hand he is a master and he already earned the Hollywood pay 100 times over by the time he actually got it. But at the same time none of that crap touches The Killer or even comes close and in addition to that...why Van Dammage? All through the 80s he was in inferior films that earned massively more money. At the time I was like, “What? You don’t need white people, why can’t you see you’re already way way better than Governator or the robot in Rocky III and all that?!”

Of course now it’s all ancient history...

But we have a new version of the same thing with is the $200M live action adaptation of a $80,000 OVA that somehow comes out less inspired by the source material and more by the financial steering committee that came up with the scheme, “Battle Angel”.

As an American kid in the 80s who had access to all this stuff at once I had a great deal of respect for Aliens and T2 and Star Wars and all that but also super low budget foreign movies from Japan like the mearly $8M Akira I knew that there was no reason for the foreigners to be envious of anything but the money.

Nausicaa of the Valley of Wind was/is my favorite movie and it cost, get this, $750,000 to make in 1984. To me that’s amazing in itself and anyone who wants a billion dollar remake of that never understood the original.
