Screens of the week !

Movie : The 400 Blows (SF098-5064)
LD player : LD-X1
Deinterlacer : Lumagen 2144 in film mode
Capture card : Live Gamer HD 2
Movie size : Letterbox
review in french : https://retro-visual.jimdo.com/laserdis ... 400-blows/
LD Quality : 2.5/5

quite bad quality LD for a great movie... too bad. They had the good taste to not add subtitles on the main image but under the image. Also Truffaut movies photography is so good, then the result seems good. I rated it 2.5.
Thanks to the lumagen and the LD-X1 I could get reasonable image. But I my previous experience (DVDO + CLD-959) the movie was nearly unwatchable.

My experience with these older Japanese LDs are very hit or miss.
The great thing was that they did release these films in widescreen before the USA, but sometimes they used poor negatives or it was a poor transfer, too dark too blurry.

And some are amazing and just as good as their newer LD transfers, or they were never released on LD in the USA and we didn't get it on DVD for another 10-20 years.

Yeah. The covers are amazing on a lot of JP editions of European classics. Sadly I can’t understand any of them in the original language except maybe Wim Wenders since he often uses as many as six languages in the same movie which...gives someone a lot more context. Japanese subs help but those are often terrible too.

Hello everyone !
I didn't have time recently to do screens... sorry.

Movie : Hell in the Pacific (8028-85)
LD player : LD-X1
Deinterlacer : Lumagen 2144 in film mode
Capture card : Live Gamer HD 2
Movie size : Letterbox
review in french : https://retro-visual.jimdo.com/laserdis ... e-pacific/
LD Quality : 2.5/5

The LD image is not so bad, but lot of parts are not well deinterlace by the lumagen (in film mode, I get better results with DVDO Edge !), and the face B quality is very low.

Thank you forper ! This is the best I could do. But too much part of the movie with deinterlacing fault. 2nd face has also too much blur and bad color timing.

I had time to do screenshots this week !

Movie : Cat People (SF078-0063)
LD player : LD-X1 (S-video out)
Deinterlacer : Lumagen 2144 in movie mode
Capture card : Live Gamer HD 2
Movie size : Hybrid open-matte
review in french : https://retro-visual.jimdo.com/laserdis ... at-people/
LD Quality : 3.5/5

The quality is very good, but too much censored scenes are spoling the LD... the I can't add more than 3.5/5...

Is it censored for violence or for nudity?

nudity. With the classical (japanese LD of 1980-early 1990) grey clouds on explicit sexual scenes.
Interesting to see that nowdays, Japan doesn't censor sexuality, but violence (Bio hazard 2 remake on PS4 for exemple)

Yeah, that’s why I was asking. Was that done for theatrical run do you think or just on video?

I have the US version and there is quite a bit of full frontal, almost like French movies even. :) The movie overall is technically bad but it’s also mesmerizing on multiple levels.

When I first started getting untranslated manga in line 85/86 there was sooooo much nudity in comics, even in Jump. Not Cat People type stuff usually but just goofy Dragon Ball or Shin-chan type stuff. “My dink looks like an elephant.” Maybe some b**bie grabbing in the stuff aimed at tweens and older. Then Video Girl Ai came and just...turned people on too much, I guess. After Ai originally ran and after the tankonban versions were into later printings they started censoring the comic. Now Jump is nudity-free but absolutely filled with upskirts and underboob and is 1000x creepier because of it. Cleaned up perversion is often so much worse than the uncut stuff...

I think censorship is also a problem of nationalism. Lot of manga were censored in France, despite of the fact that most of french comics, even for children, contains nudity and more... But people fears everytime that foreigner way of thinking is a risk for their nation. Japan does the same for foreign movies. There are more subject to censorship than mangas...
Also, until late 90s, pubic hair was forbidden to be displayed. Lot of foreign movies contains pubic hairs. Lot of manga nudity scenes are pubic hair "free" :)

I remember riding the yamanote sen in the early oughts and it was real crowded and this fat dude starting repeating BEEOHAZARDO in a real loud voice while staring crazy like straight ahead. The carriage parted like the sea for Moses and the dude got a premium seat with extra a few seats extra either side.

Come to think of it I saw tons of nutjobs on Japanese trains. This dude trying to break the glass in the window on a door comes to mind. Just punching it and punching it until his fists bled..

This week, I took pictures of my favorite movie : Exotica !

Movie : Exotica ( 4704 AS)
LD player : LD-X1 (Video out)
Deinterlacer : Lumagen 2144 in movie mode (Auto mode in frame detection = 15 is also good, even better in some scenes thanks to the lumagen filter)
Capture card : Live Gamer HD 2
Movie size : Letterbox
review in french : https://retro-visual.jimdo.com/laserdis ... m/exotica/
LD Quality : 3.5/5

The quality is not as bad as people says (See "image quality review" on LD page of LDDB). But it certainly lack of details. But the result is not that bad in term of cinema rending.
LD cover is very bad as they are trying to sell the movie as a Serie B sexy thriller.

I worked in video rental in the days of the "erotic thriller", which was a genre of movies that were ripoffs of Basic Instinct or something else, usually only one copy each. They always paid for themselves and we used to make quite a bit of fun of anything that got roped into that world, stuff like Exotica.

I've never seen it but I do own it on LD. I'll give it a shot.

Exotica is more than just an erotic thrillers (Even if i love erotic thrillers !). Too bad that the cover sells it as one. The girl on the cover is not even the same actress than the movie !
Exotica is a real piece of art in my opinion.
Atom Egoyan is one of the best movie director for me.

Why are you using SVideo out of the X1? That is kind of defeating a lot of the purpose of the 2144?

It depends of the movie. I don't know why but some movies have outline errors with my LD-X1 video out. When I use S-video, no outline errors. But yes, for movies without ouline errors, video out results are better than S-video (some rainbow effects).
For my CLD-959, I always use video out.
As the lumagen has a S-video in, it's not a so big difference.
And : my mistake : Exotica was captured in RCA video out, not S-video.

And now TOEI have censored DBZ movies for BD. Pretty f***ing pathetic that middle fingers were fine for 30 years, but now they are censoring "so children can watch it". WTF?!
