On the LDDB page ( Exotica (1994) [4704 AS] ), the note says :
"Back cover says 1.66:1 but IMDb says 1.85:1 and my set up seems to confirm that."

But when I took pictures yesterday, I notice that the image was on all the surface of my 16:9 screen, then it seems to be a 1.78:1 size.
https://forum.lddb.com/viewtopic.php?f=50&t=7528&start=40 (pictures are at the end of the page)

Questions :
- Did I forget something, or mistook in the format size ? (or maybe 16:9 means 1.85:1 ?)
- Or, if 4704 AS is really a 1.78:1 size, someone could confirm to me this is the original theater size ? Or, is it a larger image or cropped image compared to the original ?

I will also do some research !

Edit : movie on You tube seems to be in 1.78:1 too.

I think people get confused with ratio, I know I did when I had a 4.3 TV.
Now that I have a 16x9 or 1.85 I can understand what the correct aspect ratio is from looking at it.

As for the film you are asking about it could have been a 1.85 but was transferred at 1.78 as they are very close, you could be missing a little from the disc
or theater presentation.

Another thing is the film when matted, it could have been shot in 1.33 with 1.78 in mind but told to project at 1.85

All these types of things are very confusing and you can go crazy thinking about them.

Even when Ty was talking about the box set of Alien how it was actually too cropped in widescreen and you lost on the top and bottom
image.

This is one of my question : 16:9 = 1.85:1 or 1.78:1 ?
Until now I thought it was 1.78:1, but I maybe mistook all this time.

16x9 is 1.78:1. 1.85:1 is the theatrical aspect ratio. If you have a movie that is correctly formatted for that aspect ratio, you should get tiny black bars on a widescreen TV, but a lot of studios just crop the picture to remove them, although sometimes it might just be overscan.

Do you mean that 1.78:1 is always matted ? If a movie is in 1.78:1 then the original version were in 1.85:1 ?

Well it is possible that some productions specifically shot for HDTV probably are actually supposed to be in 1.78:1, but yes, 1.85:1 is meant to be the correct AR.

Even when the movie was shot in open matte (ie. 4x3), a version matted to 1.78:1 is technically incorrect, even if it does show a marginal amount of additional image compared to 1.85:1.

Well it'd be easy to determine the aspect ratio of the movie if you posted an uncropped screencap.

yes, that's right, but I may have cropped left and right some centimeters and streched up and down some millimeters... I have to setup again my lumagen ratio ! (long time I didn't do it...)
