It's actually a bit of both. The CGI effects were only formatted for 1.85 theatrical release, so scenes where there are no effects are open matte. Scenes with CGI are pan & scan.

Sorry - The above is mis-spoken. It SHOULD read:

See, changing those two references really didn't alter the content of the post. I apologize for any confusion and frustration I may have caused.

And to answer the second question from the original poster, yes, all "full screen" 4:3 video transfers of BTTF are a mix of open matte and Pan & Scan.

So you saying that all open matte releases of back to the future are actually a mix of open matte and pan&scan?

That would make sense to me. They don’t waste money hand airbrushing scenes frame by frame usually so those would have to be P&S shots or else all the FX wouldn’t fill the screen. Using the full frame for standard cuts would look better than P&S. I’ve never see it though.

You're kidding, right?

Well, maybe not "CGI" by the literal definition - Optical effects.

Let's call them all SFX (Special Effects) and the family will be happy :-)

(off-topic posts cleaned up to bring peace back to Middle Earth)

A bit of trivia for everyone then! (thank you gorkab)

We know Labyrinth (1986) had the animated owl for opening:

Or that Disney used 3D wire graphics for the vehicles scenes in TRON (1982) and final fight scene in The Great Mouse Detective (1986):

But which 1986 movie had the first scene edited on computer for visual effects (removing ropes frame by frame!)?
