Van Damme was the one who actually made John Woo come to the US because he dreamed of making a movie with him

I had a hard time with Hard Target (Woo Goes West). On one hand he is a master and he already earned the Hollywood pay 100 times over by the time he actually got it. But at the same time none of that crap touches The Killer or even comes close and in addition to that...why Van Dammage? All through the 80s he was in inferior films that earned massively more money. At the time I was like, “What? You don’t need white people, why can’t you see you’re already way way better than Governator or the robot in Rocky III and all that?!”

Of course now it’s all ancient history...

But we have a new version of the same thing with is the $200M live action adaptation of a $80,000 OVA that somehow comes out less inspired by the source material and more by the financial steering committee that came up with the scheme, “Battle Angel”.

As an American kid in the 80s who had access to all this stuff at once I had a great deal of respect for Aliens and T2 and Star Wars and all that but also super low budget foreign movies from Japan like the mearly $8M Akira I knew that there was no reason for the foreigners to be envious of anything but the money.

Nausicaa of the Valley of Wind was/is my favorite movie and it cost, get this, $750,000 to make in 1984. To me that’s amazing in itself and anyone who wants a billion dollar remake of that never understood the original.

"No thanks, we already got one" Agree 1000%

Sorry. In his specific case, sure, but I was making references to the entire “let’s get out of here, 1996 is coming” scene with pretty much all of Hong Kong’s most famous at that time. Jackie Chan did slightly better (Shanghai Noon) but also massively worse at the same time (The Tuxedo).

It was my fault to read too much punk rock into it. I thought we were all like “We don’t need you!” but what I didn’t realize is that they wanted stuff like safe sets and royalties, not just the fame. It’s complicated. But man, I sure hated the Rush Hour series. I wouldn’t cry if that Brett guy got Me Tooed right out of the industry. Those movies are terrible. Hard Target was seen by millions of people who wouldnt even consider A Better Tomorrow or Hard Boiled because they don’t have any famous millionaires in it that they knew already. If you’re one of those fanboys motivated to anger by a sense of justice few people understand (I am) then this really grinds you.

Anyone who hasn’t see Hard Boiled, A Better Tomorrow, The Peace Hotel, etc should get on it. Those movies are like water...there’s never been anything better and it ain’t coming either. The output of HK from about Police Story to...1997 or so, it’s truly amazing.

I have Hard boiled but have not been able to watch it. I hope to remedy that this year. Always wanted to see a better tomorrow so I will try to find that .

You might think John Woo's reasoning for making Hollywood movies was for the glitz and glamour of working with Western celebrities, but the truth is a bit more on the political side. In the 90s with the 1997 Hong Kong handover looming, a number individuals in the HK film industry didn't trust the Chinese government (the Tienanmen Square Massacre stuck in a lot of their minds) and didn't believe that they would have the freedom of expression that they had under British rule.

In fact it is said that Woo's A Better Tomorrow is commentary on the looming handover--years before Tienanmen Square.

Yeah, I know all that, I just compressed it into “1996 is coming”. It’s something you can sense in a lot of these movies. When they started to suck %90 of the time...that’s when you could tell the handover was complete.

Then again most things started to suck around 1997 also..

Occasionally weird subs on this one, my DVDO has displayed the full picture but here the subs on the right don't exist in full, and on the left they run off the picture..ha

I rather watch Demi in Striptease though. One thing that has never made sense to me is that she's a stripper and doesn't go all they though I've never been to an actual strip club so I don't know what they do. but it saddens me :(

picked up all 14 seasons of DALLAS (1978/1991) on DVD a while back. it's a whole hell of a lot of good vintage cheap-drama fun, actually...

I watched the Cinema Disc version of High and Low and it really blew my mind. The drama is coming at you from so many angles. That thing is a masterpiece. I also have the Criterion version which I’m long overdue to watch.
