If the parts are still in player, you can repair it. I glued one back together (with a plastic rod I added inside for additional strength). I would try to find the missing top portion and see how it fits on the lower part (should still be there) so you can see what position the part was left at and take a pic to have a position reference. Here are pics of the part I worked on..... You have to glue the part in while it's still in the base plate Hope this helps.

jefflang wrote: I found the tip, but nothing else bouncing around. On the player I fixed, the bottom portion of the part was still lodged in underneath. It might have moved enough where you don’t see it but you should be able to stick a finger underneath to feel for it. Also, I admit I had another 703 lying around so that I could reference the proper position this piece would be in to ensure the player would work correctly. It does have to be lined up precisely for proper tracking.

I will go ahead and swap the entire mechanism, and try and learn more about adjusting, tweaking, aligning, etc., these wonderful machines. Stay tuned. Jeff

CD's play but not LD's. I have the service manual. When you say, "step through all the adjustments", is that any that have to do with Side A centering? Thx!

It means if you plan to sell this player you need a test disc, manual and need to adjust all to fit this player now. These parts are not just drop and go like newer CD or DVD players. You may be able to get lucky and do all adjustments by eye if you know what you're doing, but you also may get lucky and blow out the laser and then you will be SOL as there are no parts and then you will know what my last post was all about.

A lot easier than making all these adjustments. The only piece I found was the small slotted nub I took a picture of earlier.
