CLD-99 broken in shipping. I think it is part of the tilt base, if I am reading the service manual correctly. Please see accompanying photo(s).
I circled in red is what appears to be missing, broken. I believe it is part of the black plastic holder directly to the right.
I have a donor machine, D703.
My question is, how difficult would this be to swap from the donor machine?
And how much of the base/tray to swap?

Thx in advance.

Jeff

If the parts are still in player, you can repair it.

I glued one back together (with a plastic rod I added inside for additional strength). I would try to find the missing top portion and see how it fits on the lower part (should still be there) so you can see what position the part was left at and take a pic to have a position reference.

Here are pics of the part I worked on.....

You have to glue the part in while it's still in the base plate

Hope this helps.

That sounds like a much better alternative to taking the entire thing apart.

I found the tip, but nothing else bouncing around.
This was a player I sold on Ebay, and was shipped back to me.
I would prefer not to try and glue the part back when I have a donor machine.
The plan would be to sell it again.

I'm hoping one of you good folks could direct me so I don't remove what isn't necessary in order to swap it out.

Any thoughts?

Jeff

Sad, another player buying the farm due to shipping.

Hope this can be fixed and into the hands of someone who needs another player.

On the player I fixed, the bottom portion of the part was still lodged in underneath. It might have moved enough where you don’t see it but you should be able to stick a finger underneath to feel for it.

Also, I admit I had another 703 lying around so that I could reference the proper position this piece would be in to ensure the player would work correctly. It does have to be lined up precisely for proper tracking.

That is Side A centering. You can try to fix just that, but if you swap the entire mechanism you'll have to step through all the adjustments.

In for a penny, in for a pound.

I will go ahead and swap the entire mechanism, and try and learn more about adjusting, tweaking, aligning, etc., these wonderful machines.

Stay tuned.

I’d concentrate on developing the best shipping technique.

I swapped the whole mechanism.
CD's play but not LD's.

I have the service manual.

When you say, "step through all the adjustments", is that any that have to do with Side A centering?

Thx!

It means if you plan to sell this player you need a test disc, manual and need to adjust all to fit this player now.
These parts are not just drop and go like newer CD or DVD players.

You may be able to get lucky and do all adjustments by eye if you know what you're doing, but you also may get lucky and
blow out the laser and then you will be SOL as there are no parts and then you will know what my last post was all about.

At this point with what I assume is that you lifted out both mechanisms, did you find the missing piece? If so, wouldn’t hurt trying my idea.

A lot easier than making all these adjustments.

The only piece I found was the small slotted nub I took a picture of earlier.

UPDATE:

I reached out privately to Kurtis Bahr and of course he was a great help!

Swapped entire mechanism and lo and behold she lives!
Changed the old belt, but still need to cleanup or replace grip ring.
So far it does not look like I need to tweak anything or go through numerous adjustments.
Still need to try a variety of discs (CLV, CAV) to confirm everything is ok.

I have never been able to replace this mechanism without at least some adjustments to cleanup noise or playback.
