Fixed this this afternoon.
The manual was useful for me to check if all the cogs were in place properly.
Basically the screw holding the retainer plate had been glued in for some reason and trying to remove it had caused the pillar to break off. Therefore normal vibration from operation was making the cogs come out of place and spin loose.

So I had to come up with a way to secure the plate. At first I thought about pinning the pieces of plastic with tiny drilled holes and pieces of clothes pins stuck in, then securing with epoxy, but the exactness of the work would have to be high and I wasn't even sure if that would hold. So I came up with this, basically a bent picture hook screwed into an empty nearby screw hole. The pieces of rubber are a rubber band I used as a washer so it stays tight.

And yeah, it works, now I have a karaoke capable LD player that I was going to buy anyway. I'm on a roll, fixed a CDP, DVD player and two LD players this week. I now suddenly have four fully operational LD players, there was a long time when I was down to one but I feel like a king now. Touch wood they don't blow up any time soon.
Cool story man.
