I would say any anime after the late 80s, 88, 89 have nice PQ.
Some of the early ones I have had have major chroma noise which is bothersome in the red colors but I can live with it,

What is DYRL ?
Ghibli movies have very good LDs. Especially Mononoke hime.
Escaflowne episodes are far better in LD edition than DVD. The covers are crazy beautiful (washi was used for the making of the covers), there is CAV version for some episodes and interview or others.

I will make a topic for this.

I don't really post here anymore, more like from time to time, but this is one of those times. Kundun (1997) [PILF-2819] is a joy from the beginning to the end. It's Roger Deakins favorite movie he worked on. None of that THX DNR s**t, or that Kurary SuperNTSC crap, this is a straight component to composite transfer, with detail going so far as to some rainbow artifacts. I don't have the US Laserdisc to compare, but for the money I spent on this Japan pressing, and knowing the Blu-ray from KL is upon us, I don't regret it.

I have the US one and have never seen it. I’ll give it a shot. I’d assume the master is the same.

I watched Apocalypse Now (1979) [PLFFC 33761] (PAL release) recently and I was very impressed by both picture and sound qualities (except some slight distortion on the French dubbed narrator's off voice). Some sequences, especially in the second half of the movie, were even jaw dropping in terms of color saturation.

Here's another thumbs up for a PAL LD release. I recently viewed the Pioneer LDCE UK release of Cliffhanger (PLFEB 31991) and was genuinely impressed by the picture quality on offer, solid colours and excellent overall clarity (quite amazing on close ups) the only criticism being what appears to be occasional aliasing artifacts, whilst sound quality was equally top draw stuff with some of the best rear effects and sound steering that I've ever heard, in fact very close to DD 5.1 at times but with all the benefits of the superior PCM audio. It would be interesting to compare the other European releases of this movie as I note that the French and German discs were manufactured by DADC Austria, whereas the Italian and British versions are made in Japan by Pioneer, anyone out there own/seen these other EU issues?

Finally a quick screenshot of the movie, it obviously doesn't do proper justice but does give an indication of the quality. Source Pioneer CLD-925, Display Sony VPL VW 500ES 4K Projector.

Jurassic Park is a hot one. I don't think it even has a bad US LD release.

Why are we only talking about movies in this thread ?

There are some amazing music LDs out there with excellent soundtracks.

-> Sade: Live ( 1994 ) https://www.lddb.com/laserdisc/10163/ML ... Sade:-Live

Very decent video transfer and extremely well mastered audio track. One of my favourite LDs in my collection. Bought it for 10 HK $. I love the early Sade stuff.

Madonna: Immaculate Collection US https://www.lddb.com/laserdisc/08835/38 ... Collection

I have an excellent early DADC USA pressing of said disc with zero rot. Excellent video and sound quality. I always show it to people to show how nice laserdiscs can look and sound.

Madonna: Like A Virgin ( 8 inch release ) https://www.lddb.com/laserdisc/33979/JM ... e-a-Virgin

Excellent soundtrack. My friend was impressed with the audio quality of all tracks. It sounds amazing and the video looks like coming straight off the master tape.
Borderline is just one of the amazing pop songs ever. Sounds incredible on vinyl, too.

Hiroshi Itsuki: Traveling alone on the Silk Road (1983) https://www.lddb.com/laserdisc/53371/MK ... -Silk-Road

This disc was pressed in 1983 and still plays beautifully with zero rot. The video quality is amazing. You do not see any speckles, dirt, etc. in the image itself.
Such a beautiful transfer and the analogue audio track is excellent.

Boyz N The Hood Criteiron https://www.lddb.com/laserdisc/04129/CC ... al-Edition

Fantastic video transfer. Doesn't look any worse than the DVD. In fact I prefer it over the DVD anytime. The sound quality is very very good and the video is beautiful.

While I have no music stuff anymore they are very nice.
Never got into them when they were starting to get stupid high priced.

A lot of them were shot on high end gear and then transferred directly to whatever format.

There is a lot of amazing music related stuff on both VHS and Laserdisc. Some of that stuff was only released on Laserdisc in Japan, whilst other countries had to content with the
corresponding VHS release. I have no problems collecting music VHS tapes, too. The tapes still play great after 30+ years and the sound quality is very good in many cases, better
than a lousy Dolby Digital 2.0 @ 192 or 224 kbps audio track on a DVD. Video quality is between OK and good, too. Sure there is a lot of stuff on youtube, too, but the audio quality
is suboptimal. I also like these Background Music discs from Japan. I could watch those all day long. One of my favourites is Shinzo Maeda: Hills of the Seasons which I own on MUSE.
Okinawa Underwater is nice, too, even though it is categorised as a documentary but to me it is more a BGV title. I also have the DVD of Okinawa Underwater which has some extras
that the MUSE disc does not have. It is always interesting to find these DVDs as they are hard to fine.

Very cool Confederate, you clearly seek out what you are truly interested in, not what others say is cool. I like that philosophy too.

I'm really interested in VHS HiFi Stereo. I have a small collection of Japanese music and idol stuff. Analogue but seems to have a higher bandwidth (?) and more potential than a casette tape? I never had a HiFi VCR in the VHS era and it's kind of new to me. It has that analogue smoothness and non fatiguing sound that is so easy to get out of casette but also more "punch"?

VHS Hi-Fi is better than standard audio cassettes. There is no doubt about it.
