Anybody ever into the format and still have some? I went from 4 or 5 players down to just 2 and some car stuff along with a portable walkman.

It might be impossible to have a database like this for MDs

I still use the format. Can't tell you all the model numbers off the top of my head that I've owned used.

First portable I had was a Pioneer. Next two portables were Sonys.

Had a few decks. 2 Sonys and a Yamaha.

2 car units. A Sony and Carrozeria (Pioneer)

I could never find pre-recorded material but I did use MD for a while.

Started with a great portable device: the MZR-50, sold it when a new version came out: the poorly designed MZR-55. Short battery life, bugged controls, glass screen that broke after a few days (badly mounted) and SONY took 3 months to fix it -- while not providing a replacement player.

That kind of was the end of my MD life!

Best Buy had a whole bunch one time and the next I went in I was like WTF happened to all the MDs and now it seems impossible to find something you really want at a decent price. Almost like SACD in some instances though still far bit cheaper than some.

I miss the ninties where they had MDs and LaserDiscs at the stores you could still go through them and Vinyl too.

I am tempted to get it just because it's a Pioneer Elite, but that for the price it just isn't worth it.

that's awesome. never knew Pioneer had an Elite one, I knew of Sony's ES line.

The only thing I can see that the Pioneer has that no Sony model has (that I know of) besides Legato Link (of course) is Digital Recording Level. On any other MD recorder you can change the recording level if you are recording in analog, but not in digital.

If only it had that plus MDLP, that would be one sweet deck!

Mini disc was and still is a great convenient recording format that I still enjoy.
The disc encased in a durable cover does the trick for me.

I have 2 x Players from the Sony ES range of which are built like tanks.

I will never part with them.

Until recently I was involved with a heavy metal podcast and all our interviews were recorded on minidisc.

I first saw the format about 2 years ago went I was browsing though some new VHS tapes at the local bookfest. I bought it for 50 cents brand new. I also picked up some Zip disks and a SuperDisk but sadly no LD's. They had so many vintage VHS tapes there. 1000's of them.

About 4 years ago I was in the local second hand store that buys/sells music and related equipment.
I could see the store had some mini disc players going very cheap. When I got talking to the owner he admitted that
the minidisc market was totally dead and he said he would not be stocking any more players/recorders after he
had sold the last few remaining units. He even went as far as to say he would continue to stock high end cassette walkmans
as there was still a market for them.

Now this is interesting. I was perusing the different craigslistings for cities convenient to me. Found this listing . . .

. . . guy has this higher end MD Recording deck (Sony MDS-JB930), but he only used it as a DAC for his CD player! He mentions it as a Burr-Brown DAC, so I can only imagine it's one of the 20 or 24-bit B-B DAC's. If that's the case, that would put it in the same league as an overpriced Theta outboard DAC! Of course, there are probably other factors inside the Theta that make the latter better, but it's a pretty neat idea!

I wouldn't have to use the MD deck this way though as my Pio Elite VSX-24TX has a 24-bit Burr-Brown DAC.

Also Burr-Brown was acquired by Texas Instruments several years ago, so it's unlikely that they still put out the same level of DAC's anymore.

I would look into it but I'm not close by anymore and I don't want to pay that much for it. he's probably lucky to sell and get 200 bucks out of it.

I started collecting Minidiscs (and players) a while ago ...

When i was a lot younger i did bet on the other horse (don't know if it ever made outside of the netherlands) DCC (Digital Compact Cassette)
Especially the first generations of MD's couldn't come close to the sound quality of DCC.
Later on that changed however, and the instant access was imho why MD has won the race.

Recently i purchased another player , the MD e25 from Sony, but it turned out that one of my siberian husky's is no fan of Digital music
When the mailman delivered the envelope and tossed it into the hall , Skimo my youngest husky started chewing on the package..
by the time i came home he already destroyed several discs, chewed heavily on the headphones and luckily for me , this player was made from metal
so after giving it a few dents he decided to go with the plastic items in the package

But the player luckily enough still works, however its no longer in mint condition

I mentioned DCC in the compact cassette (the analog type) thread in this sub forum. I still see them from time to time at trading shops, but I have never seen any type of DCC software--blank or pre-recorded.

Always been curious about them, but never used them since I was a somewhat early adopter of MD. When they were both on the market, I was in Japan and DCC was pretty much nonexistent in that country. So the only digital recording options I had at the time were DAT and MD really (and MDs were much cheaper!)

I have a bag of tapes over here , empty, sealed and pre-recorded.
If you ever are willing and able to buy one, i will gladly send you a tape ...

by the way , back then i did a lot of experimenting and some brands of tapes
were good enough to be used for the dcc deck.

Took some skills to drill several dents in the housing without piercing it, but
after the first 50 i became a master in creating dcc accepted tapes for 25% of the cost.

the quality is really amazing, and what made it even more valuable was the backwards
compatibility ...

But hey the best system does not always win as history teaches us over and over again...
