Alien: Special Widescreen Collector's Edition (1979) [1090-85]

Classic film that started the whole franchise.

With the original story written by Dan O’bannon, who gave us:
Alien, Return of the living dead, two stories from Heavy Metal: Soft Landing and B-17 and much more!

as disclord said this LD was over cropped on top and bottom, when watching the film i can't really tell
so it's not bad unless you know or have another copy that gives more image.

picture is clear and nice, CAV gives you some great still images of the Alien's jaws doing it's work.

i watched this on my projector, gave a nice image without any issues at about 76 inches.
my setup is 2 channel stereo, sound is from left or right without too much panning, gives the fell of being in a ship.

scenes inside the ships give a real haunting heart beat, BA BUMB, BA BUMB.
then when it goes inside the smaller safety craft there is a faster heart beat, BUMB, BUMB, BUMB, BUMB.

film is spread over 4 sides and is a classic horror film that still stands up today considering there are
only 8 actors and very little dialog it is kept at a fast pace and works well under 2hrs.

if you can get this cheap do it, nice disc for the collection. i've had my copy since it came out new.

I have this as well as the rest of the Alien films on DVD and Blu-Ray already. Its easily the best of the series. Great production designs, excellent cinematography, a haunting score and very memorable quality performances particularly from Weaver and Holm. Thanks for the review, I really enjoy reading these!

I enjoy this one. The transfer is a little grainy (not anywhere near aliens CAV set) and I'm trying to decide whether they used some DNR or not. There's just a slight hint of that telltale smeariness associated with DNR used on some releases (star wars definitive collection anyone?)

well, it did have some smearing or not as crystal clear since i was using my CLD-D503 on my projector
to see the difference in PQ, my R7G plays most films on the projector clearer but i didn't have a chance to A-B.

i think it was also disclord that said something about Aliens CAV that it was mastered wrong with lots of DNR or something like that.

yes, holm is very good as ash the android, even better than i remember.
