short version: i need a replacement part for my pioneer cld-d504.

after reading the forum, the part i need is the "m-holder" VNL-1779
now to get that part for less than i paid for my machine...

its the piece that screws onto the gear motor that propels the laser assembly forwards and backwards along the laser rail guide track. it is a piece of plastic that holds two gears. the gears rest on two pegs, and is secured to the gear motor with 4 screws.

long version:
yello, i just got into laserdisc collecting. found laserdiscs + player at a garage sale.
was able to play a few discs, everything looked pretty nice except the laser wouldnt flip over, it would get stuck and give an E1 or E9 (or some other error on display). i say, ok, sure, its got a problem, but at least i can play one side at a time and flip manually....

well that didnt last long (about 1 disc more). now its having trouble moving the laser assembly forward and backward, gets stuck after 49 seconds of play, cant fast forward out of it. obviously a mechanical problem.

i take it apart and one of the little pegs that holds the gear in place is broken off.
i will try to plastic-loctite or gorilla glue the peg on, but there isnt much surface area to secure it back together.

anyone got a dead D504 or similar parts player want to sell me a part?
also is there a service manual or some nice pictures of the internals of this? i think there may also be a problem when it tries to flip, although i moved it manually around, its not a very smooth transisition from side a to side b.

i got some pictures i can post of it later, if anyone is interested in looking at it?

if the part is expensive, i'd rather just pick up a working player from ebay...
i'm in SE mich , detroit metro area if any locals have a player they want to unload.

thanks for readin!

The part VNL-1779 costs $4.25 from Pioneer. I have a post about this talking about the shipping charge ($14.46) which I think is too much. Oh well, it is too bad I am reading your post now. I ordered the VNL-1779 part from Pioneer on 3/30. If I had known that you needed the same part, I could have added it to the shipment with no increase in shipping charge and sent it to you by USPS. It will cost you $4.25 for the part plus $14.46 shipping plus $2.95 for shipping and handling plus any sales tax to order the part from Pioneer. With New York sales tax, the part cost me $23.58.

I have the same problem that you are having except it is with a CLD-D406 player. The player will play side 1 okay. The pickup will then go to side 2 and play it okay. The problem comes when the pickup tries to get back to its side1 position. The pickup stalls on moving along the track in many places and will not get to its side 1 position without outside help. I have a spare CLD-D406 player that seems to have good gearing in the optical pickup except that the pickup cannot detect an LD or CD when there is one on the tray. I think that the disc sensor is part of the optical pickup and the pickup assembly is listed at ~$135 which is much more money then I spent on both players. So repair of my parts player will have to wait for a long time.

The 2 CLD-D406 players I have I won off E-bay. Both have and have had the same problem with the gearing being broken on the optical pickup. I do not know if both had the gearing broken during shipment or were originally broken before shipment. I did not return either of them as the shipping charges to return each them was about equal to what each cost. For example, it would have cost about $20 to ship one back and then I would have been refunded about $20 from the seller. I say this about shipping of the 2 players because I have 2 Sony LD players that I won off E-bay. Both were shipped to me and both have had no problems. No breakage of gearing or any internal parts and both worked out of the shipping box the day I received both. Do you suppose that the design of the pickup assembly is "more rugged" on the Sony's than the Pioneer's and is capable of surviving shipment better (granted the player's packing is big variable here)? I know that this sounds heretical to Pioneer fans; but, it is just an observation of mine.

I normally wait till I have to order a few parts but Pioneer does increase the handling charge as you add parts.

You'd have to hit an LD player *pretty* hard to break the m-holder. So hard everything else would be broken too. :)

They probably just broke because that's what breaks in these players.

thanks for the reply dumbchemist. i managed to order the part from a member here for $13, as he repairs LDs and probably buys in bulk :)

if i have to buy parts next time i'll probably buy 2 or 3x and then resell here to recoup that nasty s+h fee from pioneer.

looks like that gear m-holder thing breaks easily. i wonder if it can be replaced with a metal version.

any ideas about where the side 1 track meets the flip/uturn track? it does not line up in my player very well. i'll get some pics up soon.

got the replacement gearholder from grasshopper.

installed it and ... well it got stuck when making the flip.
luckily this time i had the lid off and was watching the nasty bugger.

see if you can spot the problem in this photo...

Image

see all of those dents on the metal bar? (the part that holds the plastic ld tray together) ?
it appears someone has just ice pick attacked that bar.
why? who knows. unscrew the bar, bend it back into shape. put it back together.

laserdisc player now in working order!

success!

protip: always take apart a player and CLOSELY inspect it when you buy it.
never know what kind of silly people have fouled with it.
