Courage Under Fire (1996) [0413285]

The Laserdisc was still sealed brand new its rare these days to get them sealed.

A well balanced LCRS mix with the occasional LFE.1 support. Tanks rumble the ground, cannon fire pounds and explodes all-around as does helicopters and dialouge is a clearly understood.

James Horner's score was moving as usual in good drama/action driven films.

Picture surprised me that the start as I didn't expect to see a colourfully clear image. Side B did suffer a bit of now and then crosstalk, not sure if its on other pressings as well?

Directed by Edward Zwick "Glory" and starring Denzel Washington, Meg Ryan, Lou Diamond Phillips, Matt Damon and Scott Glenn.

The story is fictitious (expect for events of the Gulf War). A medal of honour is awarded to woman pilot for bravery and an inquiry to the events is told by the survivors from several points of view of what happened?

If you like "A Few Good Men" then you'll like "Courage Under Fire".

There was no signs of any Laser-rot.

Side B had occasional cross-talk but it didn't stop me from enjoying the film.

I'm going to give picture even if side B and even if there was no crosstalk on side B it would still be a good picture.

The crosstalk is due to your player being slightly misaligned - you've had it on too many discs for it to be a disc pressing issue. Get your player realigned and you'll have an even better picture.

Matt is much cuter now that he's put on weight - of course, in "The Talented Mr. Ripley" he was hot beyond belief. In the picture above he's too skinny and looks like Vanilla Ice.

So did I read you right that there is another "Out" LaserDisc collector besides me on the LDDB?

Yep. :-D And I'm proud to say my partner can't tell the difference between LD and DVD with our home theater setup!

With some LD vs DVD its a shade of tiny difference otherwise why else would I be sticking with Laserdisc? and buying it on mad buying spree for the past several months over bluray disc?

One I can read the text on the Laserdisc cover and the cover artwork is also more appealing to the eye, where I don't need a magnifying glass to read what it says.

I don't agree with sending my Pioneer DVL-909 off for a what might be a simple clean up and alignment that might take several hours.

What about a test disc that can be used and how and what steps should be followed in order to achieving an alignment? It surely can't be that hard to do?

Also it only happens on the odd few laserdiscs not all. I haven't found one episode of STAR TREK OTS that I have watched yet, that has cross-talk and no signs of Laser-rot and same goes with this film, it had or maybe its slightly warped by a tiny degree or two?

Seeing the cross-talk I can handle and deal with it. Its Laser-rot that messes up the show.

As for Matt Damon, I hardly noticed him over those "Jason Bourne" films, that kick-a$$ he looks better today than he did back then or maybe fame has turned him, towards eating out the fridge 24/7.

Pioneer's spec for maximum allowed warpage is the thickness of an American Nickel - if you place the disc on a flat surface and can slide a nickel under the center hole or around the outer edge, then the disc is warped beyond spec - that was actually Pioneer's official test to determine if a return was allowed for warpage.

I don't know what British coin is the same thickness as a US nickel - it's about .075 inch thick.

The tilt servo that had its 1984 debut in the first solid state laser diode consumer player, the Pioneer LD-700, makes crosstalk less of an issue with warped discs, but if the player is out of alignment the crosstalk can actually look worse than on a player without a tilt servo - discs with off-center holes will also show more crosstalk on a solid state player with a tilt servo than on a top loading tube player that has no tilt ability. Red laser players don't have to have tilt servo's while infrared laser players must have one due to their larger laser spot size. And CAA Extended Play encoding cuts down crosstalk by something like 95% at the outside of a disc.

I'll use a 5pence coin which is smaller than the 1pence coin and a spirit-level to make sure.

LD is better quality to me because of no pixellation, getting them for cheap or free and they are just plain cooler. Plus, I wanted a player desperately in my 1990's video store days, but on a 1990's video store wage there was no way on Oprah's green earth I could afford one. Like the lddb banner that occasionally pops up: "Buying today what we couldn't afford 20 years ago." :-D

Back then, I wanted, *wanted* the Elite 2-disc "Elm Street" but no way I could afford the $100 price tag, but I found it a few years ago for $15, or the $300 "Beatles anthology" which I nabbed for $17 at around the same time as "Elm Street". And a Facebook friend sent me his LD collection for free- around 125 titles, of which I had interest in approx 119.

My partner got a 50" Sanyo LCD HDTV at Walmart for $250- it was a display model. After shutting off all the image processing and turning down the player's DNR considerably, the image is quite impressive.

Agree that is the one least thing I notice is no pixels just a smooth running image. Even if there's a bit dirt on the Laserdisc it keeps on playing like those EverReady bunny.
