i just acquired an "ELECTROHOME" AVR-G96, a CANADA market clone of the MITSUBISHI HS-U80, with intenal issues for about $67shipped. it will serve as a parts donor for both my HS-U80 and -U70; my U80, while in overall FANTASTIC condition for a VCR of it's age, did actually have some sort of weird rubber peg-foot mod done by the original owner, and he/she had clearly removed them and refitted the original gunmetal aluminum isolator feet before listing the deck for sale. a rubbery silicon-like residue was left, seemingly bonded to the sheet metal bottom panel, which i tried my best, but ultimately failed to remove, so this -G96's identical bottom panel will be replacing it. also, the G96's isolator foot set will be going to the -U70, making my HS-U80 and HS-U70 REALLY well and truly look like a matched set. finally, since someone on these boards had suggested that my ailing U70 was suffering a funky PSU, i'll go ahead and swap that out with the G96's identical PSU and see if that cures my problem... [QUOTE=Tasuke;464064]uncharacteristically, i never took any photos of the AVR-G96 that just came in yesterday. indeed, it was in poor, non-functional internal condition, CHOCK-LOADED full of cat-dander. externally, the parts i really needed were in fine shape, so a general cleanup, and on they all went to the HS-U80; the HS- U80 DIGITAL EFFECTS module, up close and personal; some of the few good condition cosmetic parts i kept from the G96 hulk; (the thing was pretty well worn out and rough around the edges)

This is the only pic I could find of it: Quote: to my Myopic Eyes, Upscaled Legacy SD Video on an HDTV does not look THAT Bad Okay. To my eyes a purely analogue chain always looks better. Quote: as to justify going well the hell and gone out of my way to try to locate a halfway-decently-sized CRT Monitor for sale within Driving Distance... to say nothing of having to Muscle around a 100-odd lb. front-weighted Block... Since 2010 I've had my KVHR-M36, the last CRT Sony released in Australia. It's moved over 1000km between cities once and 5 times in the same city after that (I rent). Weighs about 100kg (220lbs) and I'm a skinny dork. I pay movers but I can lift it with one other person. Haven't had a complaint yet and no damage to the set. Here it is in action recently, not that the picture acurately shows the naturalness of the picture in this shot: Maybe in this one? Anyways I was asking about my R7 on Tapeheads and I just get a bunch of pretentious idiots who keep telling me obvious BS like "make sure you use a transformer" - no dah, if I didn't in Australia with 240v my VCR would be toast! They actually insisted below board on top of my non-working R7 head unit was "probably just a variant used for a different market" instead of having been swapped out by the previous owner before he sold it to me hahaha. Some of the pins aren't even soldered! Here is my latest unit, intact head board and actually outputs video, but has a herringboning top left to bottom right..Plan is to take this head and put it in the other VCR. Only thing is, and you might know this Tasuke, do I need to desolder all the points before I unscrew the two screws and then remove it? The guys on Tapeheads just try to get me to buy their oscilloscopes before I touch anything haha..

In a Perfect World... i would have Bought my Grandma's 1960's-ish house that i grew up around from her and her husband when they sold it off in the early-2000's... and had it cleaned-up/lightly-restored to the height of it's glory from my child/teenhood in the late-80's/late-90's.
i would have then decked most every room on the main floor and fully-finished Basement (TWO Houses in one!!) with a personal-dream one-brand Hi-Fi~A/V system from each of the old Japanese Greats (SONY, PIONEER, DENON, YAMAHA, ONKYO, KENWOOD, KYOCERA Etc.) and that would have of course included at least one personal-favorite RP, FP and DIRECT VIEW CRT Display from at least SONY and PIONEER.
That Stated... Here on Planet Earth, my lifestyle simply hasn't been conducive towards owning a CRT of any size that may see only infrequent use for a long time now, and only this year, -2024- has there been sufficient change in my Lifestyle/Housing arrangements to have actually made such an unwieldy and semi-redundant appliance even possible as an option...

Yep, I want a house that's basically early '90s. Want no wi fi, clock radios, a large desktop computer, and everything closed circuit. Look at your life like a marathon, not a sprint. Not everything needs to happen now, some things are destined to happen over time. Like a CRT.

Since this is the "not Laser Discs" forum, this should be OK to comment I would think... You can have a home just like that now if you choose to. (I do not imagine that AUS has any laws that are radically different from those in the USA.) In my home, I still have hard-wired telephones with copper wire direct to the phone company central office, a wired computer network, wired security system, and a clock radio next to my bed. I get real TV signals from -antennas- here (a good one on my roof, and "rabbit ears" antennas for casual use and testing). My cars and home stereo system receive real stereo music stations from the free FM radio band, or I can play any of hundreds of CDs that I have owned going back to the 1980s. None of that is hard to achieve or maintain if you make the efforts, which include ignoring the constant badgering (relentless pushing) to sign up for pay services of all kinds. I also do have a big UHD TV set and 4K disc player, and a recent-model cell phone. You can enjoy the good systems and equipment from the past -without- denigrating modern systems and those who appreciate them.
