Last new-ish anime I've watched are High School of the Dead--think Tenjou Tenge meets Dawn of the Dead. And Panty and Stocking with Garter Belt--only because it's the latest from Gainax, but it's waaaaay whacked out. It's like someone tried to make a Japanese version of The Powerpuff Girls using lots of crack and acid. High School of the Dead OpeningPanty and Stocking with Garter Belt Opening

I've been watching a LOT of Urusei Yatsura (the original 1981 TV series) recently, and I think it's awesome. It's too bad that Animeigo only did the first 38 episodes on Laserdisc in the US (I'm surprised it's on Laserdisc in the US at all) .

I've been watching "Round Vernian Vifam", an excellent 80's show about little kids running mechs. Now I have more laserdiscs to track down: the Vifam box sets await . Vifam is definitely cool: I even bought a copy of the "Vifam Perfect Memory" book from an Amazon seller, of all places (this is a thick 1985 book loaded with pics from the series, just like a "Roman Album" but much thicker - the "Macross Perfect Memory" is another from this series by "Out" magazine): I have also been watching some Zillion, another great classic from the 80's. Zillion was the first show done by the Production I.G. crew, and the quality of the animation really reflects this. Zillion has that nice, smooth animation typical of "Bubble Era" Japan, when money flowed like water for anime budgets (and animators had no cg shortcuts). I picked up the whole thing on LD the last time Urabanchou had a big sale, and could not be happier: these are some nice LDs!

It was one of the first Anime BD's I bought. The style is so awesome... almost monochrome. The violence, the muscles. Just pure win! Should rewatch it one day.

Watching Orguss 2...once again, not on LD or even DVD, but I have a ton of VHS tapes because I never considered how much better Laserdiscs would be. I heard that LDs were cheaper than VHS back then, but have no proof...was that always true? I probably paid $29.99 for this VHS tape. Here's an ad i found from 1995 that shows VHS are cheaper than LD, but I suspect that LD were cheaper in the 80s, and the price inequality switched in the 1990s

If you bought Japanese versions LD was cheaper. Typical feature films (Macross: DYRL, Nausicaa) were about $100 each on LD and $130-150 on VHS because VHS was priced for rental. Import VHS collectors were unheard of in the US because the money you saved from buying the LD would pay for a player pretty quick, and who wants to pay %50 more for a hugely inferior format?
In the US the LD was usually more expensive. An exception would be Bubblegum Crisis because of how they bundled the episodes. The BGC tapes were $40 per episode, 8 volumes total, and the LDs were $65 each, 4 volumes total, and included the concert releases.
Now I think you can get BGC for like $1 and episode or something like that on DVD. Most US released anime now goes for between %2 and %10 of what the original Japanese release cost. Gundam 0083, a "cheap" OVA back in the day was about $600 for all the LDs. The US DVD now is like maybe $25. The original Gundam series was about $800-900 on LD, it's about $50-60 for the US DVD.

i havent been watching anime recently, due to moe and fanservice animes killing my taste for anime alltogether. but i'll share some of my favorite, possibly underrated ones: flame of recca cromartie high armored trooper votoms (the old series, the remake is so bad i was actually angry at it) all studio 4c films. have you seen them all ? Nightwalker: The Midnight Detective read or die project a-ko trava fist planet dead leaves interstella 5555 all of Mamoru Oshii's stuff. its probably sacriledge here, but some of the usa dub companies have taken old anime and put on 'funny' (aka not accurate translation) dubbing on shows. shin chan ( episode : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=peGyBzSV1qg ) ghost stories ( clips here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SxJ4VWoeOzs ) i think there are a few other series but dont remember. at least 'super milk chan' has one too.

Yeah, I can see where you're coming from. It's rare to see something new that is both original and interesting. tinkerwb wrote: its probably sacriledge here, but some of the usa dub companies have taken old anime and put on 'funny' (aka not accurate translation) dubbing on shows.
Not sure how accurate Shin-Chan's dub it, but it's funny as hell!
