Outbreak (1995) [13632]

Video

The transfer is near excellent. Everything you would expect from a disc dating 1995. The video is very stable. No speckles, dots, scratches or any imperfections which is expected on this fresh transfer. I didn't see any aliasing or major bad edit. Gennum VXP deinterlacer stayed in film mode throughout the film. It is totaly noise free. Just a tiny bit of chroma noise that is inherit with Laserdiscs. Blacks are deep and solid(thanks to low chroma noise). There is good amount of grey detail. There isn't any artificial contrast boosting. Colors are very strong however LDs shortcomings are apparent here, especially on flesh tones. If LD had a little more chroma bandwidth, this could be a very film like experience. Fortunately I couldn't see any trace of edge enhancement or video noise reduction. Overall the picture is soft. I have seen transfer very clean, free of edge enhancement and overall sharper. This transfer is not sharp by any means. There might be some minor gaussian filter applied which caused the soft image but I couldn't see any ghosting or smearing indicating digital video noise reduction. Side changes are between appropriate scenes, nothing distracting. The aspect ratio is a nice 1.85:1 which fits perfectly with modern widescreen displays. My copy is totally rot free.

Edit
I just read the review on blu-ray.com on the blu-ray release of the film. It's nearly a perfect match to my observations. That review also mentions dull colors on flesh tones and a possible filter that cause the image to be soft. This confirms either the Blu-ray disc was sourced from the same transfer or this movie simply looks like this. I guess blaming LDs chroma bandwidth was unnecessary since the BD release also has the same narrow colors.

Audio

Available soundtracks are AC-3 and Dolby Surround on PCM channels. This review is for the AC-3 track. It is absolutely perfect. Very clean and detailed. I couldn't hear any roll off on the high frequencies. The bass is strong and deep. This mix utilizes all 5.1 channels to full extend. If you want to show off discrete surround channels, especially overhead effects, this is the demo disc for you. Helicopters flying over your head is absolutely fantastic. This will be among my audio demo discs.

Good evening substance,

I have just read your review of OUTBREAK, and was impressed with your overall knowledge of picture settings, and sound evaluation.

I could never pretend to know the amount that yourself & others know here, but when time allows I do tinker, and tweak adjustments.

Available funds and trying to find the time to do such things is limited for myself, as I work the many hours that I do.

I am currently focusing on my large Laserdisc order that will take myself around four or five months to pay for and then home projects, then hopefully, tidy a few cables, add a few more connections, connect this and that up, and then Purchase an HLD X0, the latter would be a dream come true.

I enjoy all of my players, but the X0 would represent the pinnacle of all that LD stands for to me personally.
A seller has these in storage and I know of another person who has essentially 3+ X0's, that are pretty well hardly used and in boxes for most of the time............

I am sure that I have mentioned the above before to yourself and the scaler.......one with SDI is needed, and on my to do list.
Oh!... if only the funds were there eh............

Returning to the subject that you mentioned.

Outbreak I have two of these...........and thought this was a very clean transfer indeed, yes maybe not the sharpest LD picture that I have seen but none the less a clean presentation that is a joy to watch.

I shall be looking at purchasing the Japanese version of this at some stage, to see if the picture is any better, whoever it's the different cover art that also appeals to myself as well.

Kind Regards to you Substance

Be good and look after yourself sir

I thought this was a good time to re-visit this film. I just moved to California and now in a lock down. My stuff and gear hasn’t arrived yet (I don’t know when they will in this situation). So all I have is my 32” Asus PA329 (PC monitor) and my Apple TV 4K. This time I watched it on Netflix. It’s good movie. I recommend.

This is subject matter too grim for me even when I’m not hiding from real plague. I can’t even imagine watching it on purpose now. Similarly I would not watch Helter Skelter after my family was murdered, I would not watch Showgirls after learning my daughter ran away to become a stripper, etc. I guess I’m pretty weak psychologically.
