So a few years back I gave my mom and stepdad a used Pioneer CLD-D605 so they could borrow movies from me (since I have many more movies on LD than DVD) as well as the fact that I could get them the movies that they were looking for that were not on DVD (George Pal's Atlantis: The Lost Continent, John Huston's The Fugitive, etc.)

I went to their place for Christmas and tried out the player, and after I loaded a disc and tried playing it, the player made a sort of buzzing noise, wouldn't spin the disc and then opened the tray again with a U1 error.

This happens every now and then, and the solution to the problem is loading a disc then pressing the B side play button. The player will "flip" to the B side and it will play. Then I stop the player and then hit play normally and the error does not return . . . at least for a while.

Is something getting tangled up in the player or something like that for the error to come about every now and then?

Normally this is due to the loading belt needing to be cleaned. Take off the top, open the tray and at the front left under the tray you'll see the loading belt. Remove and clean it and the small while pulley on the motor and see what happens.

Thanks Kurtis! I'll give that a try next time I go over there.
