All DVL series use the flawed fujitsu mpeg decoder for DVD playback. It has chroma upsampling error and offers no digital video output as in hdmi or dvi. DVD is a digital format, its best to keep the signal in digital domain and output via hdmi or dvi. SDI modification is possible but this doesn't by pass the mpeg decoder so it will always have chroma upsampling error in the video.

LD section is average to above average. There are different iterations for the dvl series. The US got the Elite models DVL-90 and 91. DVL-909 US version is very similar to DVL-90. You can add a resistor somewhere in the board and turn your dvl-909 into dvl-90 which has more advance noise reduction adjustments. You need to check its eprom for its firmware, this mod only works on older eprom. I read somewhere that the Euro version can use this hack too but loses PAL support. 919 model gets newer generation audio dacs which are 24bit and DTS playback on DVD. It uses the same fujitsu mpeg decoder so it has the chroma bug. Asian versions are similar to the US version and can't read PAL LDs but they get a nicer remote control (and gold finish).

There is a Japan only model DVL-H9 which needs extra attention. It has even better dacs than 919 and possibly progressive scan for DVD. I am sure it uses the same fujitsu mpeg decoder. Pioneer always had the chroma bug on its DVD players until they switched to mediatek decoders around 2007. Its LD section has the good 3D comb filter (they say even better than the one in X9).

So as a DVD player, its pretty bad. As a LD player, average to above average. (Good on the case of H9). In the case of PAL playback, in my opinion DVL-909/919 are the best PAL machines. Well talked about D925 and 2950 have antiquated electronics comparing to DVL series. They use analog delay and phase shifting for TBC, DVL series has the good digital processing for this.

The remotes are lame. The DVD player sucks by today's standards but I'm assuming you won't be using it since vastly superior DVD players exist now for less than what you probably paid to ship this thing.

Very good players, honestly, but for me they just aren't as fun or cool as the older stuff.

One disadvantage I can come up with is the skipping problem on side B. In the first couple of minutes the player gets into a loop where it can play a specific scene over and over again. I have had this problem and cured it by doing some minor adjustments, but it seems to be a common problem with especially the DVL-909.

I've been using a DVL-919E for many years now and have no complaints. The DVD player sucks but to be honest I doubt anyone ever uses one of these players for that anyway. I bought mine broken for less than £10 and fixed it up myself. I'm not sure I'd pay the prices people are asking for them now.

The advantage is that it will be a working LD player that you can use.
That's if you actually watch LDs

Any truth that the hardware for LD is based on the 604?

For the picture quality on my DVL-909 in my opinion it look bit softer than I expected when I played an LD.

I just got my first LD player: the 909. I don't know much about it yet, but it seems to run great. I'll probably never put a DVD in it.

I've read conflicting info about the ability to play PAL on a US machine. Does anyone know whether my machine can play PAL discs from Europe?

I use some times DVL 909 and 919 in my university to show movies to students. These are good players, with few smearing and soft image. It is a good choice I think, and they work pretty well compared to all the Sony LD players in other classrooms.

The DVL-V888 has LD-G capabilities. So that's one advantage I guess.

The dvl-700/90 style player has a little fan that runs whenever the player is on, I find it to be somewhat annoying, and they took it out in the later models.
I'm happy with my Dvl 90 but the fact Dvls are based off the 504/604 platform is a little disappointing to me.

Price wise I'd rather pay $75-100 for a Cld 503 then $400-500 for a Dvl-90/91

I never liked that spinning disc graphic that it shows while spinning up side 2. The ideal LD players go to black and show nothing on the screen til side 2 starts up.

That is the average price I have seen on ebay in the last few months, yes of course they can be found for less (especially non-elite) but that is the range I most often see.

Here is a DVL-90:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Pioneer-Elite-DVL-90-cd-cdv-ld-ntsc-laser-disc-player-with-remote-excellent-1-/372009211171?hash=item569d7a1523:g:-HUAAOSwJ4hY-1M9

Edit: Completed listing Here , it does seem like prices have lowered a bit since I last checked, but I've seen other sales where they go for this (in some cases more then CLD-95/97).

My DVL 909 developed a weird problem. Every several seconds a white dot races through the screen. I know it's not laser rot. It can happen in pretty much every part of the screen.

Anyone experienced this and knows what it is ?

this happens on certain discs?

i have a few discs where a white dot will appear on my screen for a second or so, then goes away when on my dvl-909.
it's not my player must be the discs.
from other discs there's no problems with white dots

I picked up a DVL-919 from Japan and it had this issue. I replaced every board and the LaserDisc pickup to no effect. I ended up replacing the spindle motor and platform from an DVL-919 from Hong Kong and the problem went away. I am pretty sure it was the platform assembly itself and not the spindle motor.
