What's the best way to photo an LD cover for submitting to LDDB?

I'm going to add a bunch of Japanese titles over the next weeks and months.

I tried with my cellphone today and whenever I took a straight-on picture to get it square, the glare was ridiculous.

Cheers

Great topic here !

Simple solution is had by adjusting the angle of your shot which can mitigate the glare somewhat.

The real solution is using a tripod and camera with variable aperture settings to reduce the need (or eliminate the need) for a flash.
Check photo sites, these can help with the details in setting up ideal situations to shoot objects.

Good luck with your photos !

Cheers !

Like above.
I sometimes have to take stuff into different rooms to get more or less glare.
This is an experiment and its not like we can control the sun or light bulbs giving off the glare and say HEY LIGHT STOP THAT.

The best way would be to look up guides for how to take photos of LP covers. Lots of enthusiasts for that kind of thing, so I'm sure there are some great guides available on various sites.

I personally don't own any fancy equipment, so I just place the cover on the floor in a room with natural daylight and try my best to get it as square as possible with my phone.

Going outdoors can help a LOT but then this is an AV forum... :)

I’ll do some of this and update later with some results with both SLR and iPhone SE.

I’m not sure if this is a joke or not but yes, you can control the light. You’re a #$&@-ing man aren’t you? Are you going to let some brainless piece of glass push you around? You control the angle, the brightness, the distance, the number of lights, the curtains, the location, the time of day you shoot, etc...in ANY house, any place pretty much.

If human kind can do anything well it’s control light. That and complain about the need for more equipment. :)

Oops, that was a typo.
Can't LOL

But it was sort of a joke, how can we be in the day and age that we are in and not figure out how to take a good picture.
All you need is to spend 20 minutes and you can pretty much figure it out, or maybe not

Cameras are like cars. They keep lowering the limbo pole of minimum skill required but the users just find a way to limbo lower and get bad results. The iPhone was made for dumb selfies and pictures of drunk chicks taken from 3 feet away and it’s SO GOOD at these things that it’s almost impossible to take a bad photo of that nature but people still manage to do it.

If Apple came up with a special mode just for taking pictures of our collectible crap it would excel at that but for now hen nights and kid’s birthday parties are the target audience so you’ll have to practice some when taking photos of LDs, it’s still not that hard.

Btw, I fell asleep last night before I got around to it...so I’m pretty lame myself. :)

If you've got a decent digital camera and a tripod, that will give you the best results if you can set them up so that the camera is parallel with the LD cover and natural lighting rather than having lights around you.

Just make sure you use the timer (pushing the button will move the camera) and adjust the shutter so that it takes in more light.

Otherwise, if you have access to a copier that doubles as a scanner, I found that gives the very best results:
