The HDMI input on the Xbox One S is bound to YCbCr 4:2:0. Considering how awful video games look with such sub-sampling, Microsoft must've smoked crack when designing the input. I wouldn't recommend using it at all.

He is watching on a computer monitor that doesn't have a zoom feature so that is what he is using for.

Anyone know if that input processes the video at all or is it just a pass through?

Like I said, it is bound to YCbCr 4:2:0. If your feeding it with a signal that has a higher sub-sampling (which you most likely are) the color resolution will be decreased. In other words, no, it's not passthrough.

So with this setup LD Player -> DVD Recorder HDMI out @ 1080i -> Xbox One S out @ 1080p HDMI -> computer monitor the Xbox would actually degrade the signal?

Technically speaking, yes. Since YCbCr 4:2:0 isn't accepted by older HDMI standards (like HDMI 1.3), the output signal from the DVD Recorder will either be in YCbCr 4:2:2 or (more likely) 4:4:4. By reducing the chroma information, this means that color information will be lost. Whether this is noticeable or not when using Laserdisc is a different question however, as the chroma of CVBS is far inferior to 4:2:0.

When using sources like video game consoles or PCs, sub-sampling is very noticeable however. This makes the HDMI input of the Xbox One S very incomplete if you ask me.

Why does this feature exist in the first place? Forgive my ignorance. My last new systems were PS3 and WiiU and neither had inputs, neither do any other system I’ve ever owned.

I guess Microsoft wanted to give people more options / functionality.

MS isn’t going to just put a port on a thing for no reason. Every port costs money. Is it for recording home movies onto an XBox based DVR app or something? How do they demo it?

I'd say that the HDMI input would be good if it supported HDCP 2.2, since several projectors and displays only have one input that can handle this encryption. But since it doesn't, it's pretty much useless for pass-through.

An extra HDMI input probably cost them 50 cent more per unit. If they make the Xbox One S one dollar more expensive, they're not losing any money.

not having an xbox other than the first one. I couldn't imagine why they would included an input like that. I have heard they finally killed Kenetic off which was only to compete more with the wii. Microsoft does strange things...it would probably make since the higher ups why they included it or syne not

50 cents per unit adds up to a lot.
If you understood how business worked you would realize that any company would cut an option if it were even 1 cent more.

Any cuts equals more profits for the shareholders.

Also why when you do a job now you are doing the job of 3 people rather than what it used to be.

For larger quantities, 50 cent is a lot per unit but for the buyer it isn't. Adjusting the final price to cover up such an expensive will not really be noticed by anyone.

They already lose money on every system. If they add add a $0.50 port and sell 100M units they just elected to throw away $50M. MS isn’t afraid of course, they lose billions on XBox, have done for 15 years, but even in that dumpster fire there are controls. They don’t just add ports for the heck of it. More to the point, there are plenty of things that cost $0.50 that this thing doesn’t have so why this feature?

According to some stuff I read I guess the point is to put whatever else you have through it instead of using an AVR (or another HDMI port on the TV?) so it does seem odd that they kneecapped it.

I guess they want all non-MS products to look inferior? :)

Microsoft wanted the Xbone to be the focal unit of your home system, that was part of their naming the new system the "One". I don't use it, but the main point for the HDMI input is for cable boxes. Though technically you could use it as an extra HDMI port of needed. For people who can't focus I suppose or like to multitask? You could split screen television while playing a game, etc.

Ah, my cable TV wouldn’t look any worse if it was in a lower color space, it already is and always looks like crap.
