I remember once searching for different LD players and found these MUSE players. Didn't know what really was the difference between that and the normal Laserdiscs. That was until Techmoan off course.
Techmoan is wrong though that they cost between 2500-8000. I have found Muse players for sale for 1500 euros.
It is the Pioneer DVL-H9 which is a DVD LD combo player which also can play MUSE discs.
I have nothing against Techmoan without him I wouldn't have bought an LD player. Just found this little mistake in his video. Also I'm impressed with the quality considering the players first came in 1993. If I will have the money I will buy one in the future.
(EDIT) I was told that the H9 can't play MUSE and it is true it can't. Don't know where I read that or did I remember wrong but I feel like such a fool now. Hopefully no one went out and bought a DVL-H9 because of me being a moron.

I guess I shouldn't be surprised that Techmoan is actually demoing this stuff. The Technology Connection videos left me wanting after he mentioned all the speciality LD stuff but didn't demo any of it. I still wanna see LD+G in action, too!

He should've been showing off sold listings rather than BIN listings. People can ask anything they want, doesn't mean will actually pay those prices.

No, the DVL-H9 cannot play MUSE.
If you're looking to get around cheap you could look for a Hi-Vision player by Panasonic or Sony instead of Pioneer. NTSC playback won't be as impressive (if present) but of you only want MUSE and can find a working player then it may be worth a shot. Reliability is a different question though.

Since there are no parts available for any of these MUSE players reliability is in question too.
I'm still confused about LD+G and wouldn't really mind if Techmoan showed.
The little I do know is that it usually uses an external decoder to generate subtitles, and it uses the player's optical output to connect to the decoder. Great way to avoid hardcoded subtitles, but considering it's hardware requirements, I can see why it wasn't all that common outside karaoke.

So is every player. Damn them for getting rid of their spare parts.

LOL, yes but it hurts much more when buying a player for 1-3 or 8 thousand dollars that need parts. I've heard of lasers and other stuff going in these players.
I've run my 3070 for years straight, used to play CDs on constant loop for hours on end, watched well over 2000 discs and who knows how many multiple times I've watched the same films, and still no issue with the laser.
Grease was hard but laser and all other parts were perfect.
I think Techmoan is very wrong about the P5 error. I am certain that spending 300 or 400 $ on a power supply unit as he did was an utter waste of money. I am sure that it can be fixed very easily.
My HLD-X0 had the same issue ( P5 ) when playing MUSE CAV discs ( MUSE CLV was still working fine as were standard NTSC laserdiscs ). Kurt Bahr's suggestion was spot on right. He told me to have the lens of the laser pickup unit cleaned and that solved my problem. If that does not work than most likely the laser pickup unit needs to be realigned ( which isn't easy but it is feasible ).
Is it really true that the S-Video output of the HLD-X0 or the HLD-X9 is giving better picture quality than the standard composite output ?
Wondering if his P5 error is a worn out rubber mat on the turntable.
I occasionally get a P5 that begins with it sounding like the disc is slipping.
Interestingly when that has happened on a couple of occasions (but the disc got to play rather than ending up as P5) there was some picture instability at around 10 min. They were CLV discs and I wonder if that might be a zone of speed change with what would actually be a CAA disc and the slipping was creating issues causing the player to constantly brake and accelerate for a little while until it settled down??
I had changed the grip on this player and it only happens rarely. Cleaning the label of those discs seems to sort the issue.

Not in the case of the Mitsubishi filter in the X9 & S9! It is very sharp, but on certain motion results in awful checkerboarding. With an X9 I'd definitely recommend using composite out and good external filter, you can get a picture just as detailed and sharp but without the artefacts.
On the other hand the NEC filter in the R7G & H9 is really good. The X0 has an older version of the NEC.

It was great to see MUSE LDs in action, I personally could never justify the expense so these videos were a real treat. He's probably getting flooded with fix suggestions just now so I wouldn't be surprised if we see a part three some day.
