Well this has to be craziest thing I've seen so far.

He only says it's made by Sharp. Anyone have any idea what model it is?

Probably not - I went through every single player on the archive except for Pioneer's 90's models and came across nothing like this.

I’ve never seen that before.

Frankly, it’s super dumb! You don’t want a portable LD player. You barely want one that’s movable.

And for good reasons. It's a prank!

LP boombox, he must have an accomplice out of camera who actually operates a LD player.
The timing of pushing the boombox buttons are not exactly in sync.

The video was just posted a day too early!
Should have been April 1st.

Dammit, I thought there was something weird about the way the disc wobbled inside the player in a way that wasn't really consistent with something spinning at around 1500 RPM - it's barely spinning at 45!

It does look to be spinning at 33rpm, also I highly doubt that if running a high speed LD motor on batteries it would make through even one side of the disc.

Well, it's not entirely far-fetched. Pioneer did have an entire line of "portable" systems that incorporated LaserDisc players. None were vertical play, and none had a monitor.

Somehow I doubt that’s AC/DC.

A portable Karaoke machine in Japan. That would never surprise me.

There's two Pioneer models apparently, CCS-LV1 and CL-J75LD, and that one looks like the latter.

Neither one looks portable. They're more like the typical mini-hifi setup of the 90's, with the atypical addition of a Laserdisc player. Interestingly, it appears to have a manual voltage selector despite having a permanently attached power cord.

Supposedly 1000W plus the load of a spinning LD? You’d need a car battery or like 100 D cels. The idea is absurd. It had to be AC only.

I like that it has surround speakers. Somehow I doubt it has AC-3 or DTS. Pro-Logic maybe? :D

Yes, that was actually the CL-J75LD. Pioneer had close to 50 different "component" models. Some were individual components that you could stack together, while others (like this J75LD) which were "all in one" units that you couldn't separate. The CX-J900 for example had a CLD-J990G LD player, CT-J990WR Dual Cassette Deck, SP-J990 Karaoke unit, PL-J210 Turntable and SX-J990 Receiver/Controler. You could add/remove components as desired, and even switch out the speakers with two or three different models. The kicker with most of the LD players in setups like this is they cannot be used as stand-alone players. They have a Video Out, but the only audio connectors are a "component" level ribbon cable that feeds up to the receiver/controller.
