Dear LDDB and Julien,

My name is Daisuke Beppu.

I am told by the great and always reliable Mr. Peter Biancardi that DaDon is a "reputable" seller and that I should post my situation here on LDDB in this "Caveat emptor" section, and so I am doing so now.

Around the very beginning of June, I made an order to DaDon to purchase a few laserdiscs (all Criterions or Voyagers).
Now, I did not make this purchase via LDDB, but rather, I made this purchase through DaDon website.

The payment was to be made via PayPal, with an invoice to be sent to my PayPal account. And when the invoice came, I paid the amount indicated on the invoice and in fact DaDon acknowledged receipt of such payment in a separate email to me.

However, it is now August 1, 2018, and I have not yet received any communication or any package.

Please note that, up to today (August 1), I did send to DaDon a couple emails to politely ask him about the shipping situation, but I received no response at all. Therefore I do not even know if he has even shipped the ordered discs. All that I know that I have paid for something that I have not yet received.

At this point, I don't care about the discs and I just want my money back. If anyone here knows DaDon, please tell him to refund my money.

Best regards.
Daisuke

Hello Daisuke-san,

I think DaDon's website is running some kind of eCommerce framework (probably WordPress), meaning that ordering/confirmation are automated even if no one is monitoring them.

I'm not sure the website is still maintained:

  • DaDon hasn't visited LDDB in 400+ days
  • Most recent blog post is from October 2013
  • Last time I checked the account for image storage had been deactivated (was using laserdiscs.biz and edgecastcdn.net)
  • The previous eBay Store dropped all LDs and was selling cheap watches, now it's dead (or renamed)
  • Most recent tracked eBay feedback was January 2017

I think that DaDon is out of business for now.

You can try to contact their Facebook here => https://www.facebook.com/DaDonsRarities. Most recent post is ALSO the Xmas blog post from October 2013.

The Twitter account is useless (bots posts, https://twitter.com/DaDonsRarities), so is the Google+ one (https://plus.google.com/+Dadons-laserdiscs) with the same blog post.

The good news is that you used Paypal and should start a Paypal claim to void the transaction.

Julien

Dear Julien,

Thank you very much for your kind and thorough reply.

I have initiated the PayPal claim already, at the stage of making a final attempt to contact
Seller directly. However based on your information, I will proceed to escalate the matter to PayPal and seek to have the payment voided.

Thank you so much for your kind reply.

I hope you are well.
Best regards.

The website turns up quite often when I search for titles on google. I'd be surprised if OP is the only one to try and buy something from there.

Duncanism is a well documented and confirmed plague now. Even the most reputable and oldest seller can’t claim immunity. Buyers be aware from now on.

Duncanism
/'dʌŋ.kənɪzəm/
noun
  1. Unresponsive service provider after money has been duly paid.
"I've sent my LD Player for repair to Duncan but he stopped answering emails. I believe I'm a victim of Duncanism."
synonymous: scam, fraud, MIA, communication breakdown, Comcast, Ponzi scheme

I think this needs to be kept in mind as well. I’ve been on a lot of Internet forums for a long time and Usenet before that. I’ve seen the most highly esteemed fellows fall to the lowest lows in the eyes of their fan communities. Its not about good or evil. I’m not saying this to defend myself in any way (aside from a permanent anti-capitalist frown that bothers a lot of people my internet rep is actually pretty solid) and I’m the FIRST one in line to “judge” or player hate. It’s just the attrition of the human condition. There are some things even Superman can’t lift, not forever anyway. Once you learn this, don’t forget it, and you’re less likely to be taken by surprise by it in the future.

Also, I should say, my issue with DaDon wasn’t that he eventually flamed out, but rather that he was a gouger who advertised stuff he didn’t even have. He’s always been a time waster IMO, now he just doesn’t even bother to mail the product. He was really ahead of the curve on some methods many more sellers use now.

Also, mob worship is as deplorable as it is passé. (We can assume he wasn’t a university Don or Don enthusiast.)

For the life of me I can't remember exactly but when I ordered a long time ago now I got the LD in some cardboard. It was weird because it had something written on it but what it was I don't remember though I only ordered 2 titles and got a refund since he didn't have 1.

I always hated the site since there was so many titles but hardly anything in stock.

Dear Julien and the LDDB community:

Thank you very much for all of your kind responses.
This is just to let you know that PayPal has agreed to refund the entirety of my payment.

Thank you again.

Best regards.

I too hated that, he would have some rare anime titles or Japanese films on his site and say in stock soon?? Or something like that.

If I ever bought from him it was early on in my LD resurrection collecting days around 2004-6, after that I would focus on buying from collectors whenever possible.

Well, he may be, however he played the role of a mob boss to me.....
I was offered a deal I could not "refuse" on several occasions ......

Greetings everyone,

I started reading last night & Wednesday morning about Da-Don,

Time and unforeseen circumstances can and do befall us all.
Understandably no one knows what people are going through in their dayly lives.

I purchased around 10 Laserdiscs from this seller years ago, and was impressed by his correspondence and goods received well packaged.

I cannot comment any further than my personal experiences.

Sorry to hear of other members here who have been let down.

Kind Regards to everyone
